In post #1 you mentioned that the sat nav drive got wet some time back, was that a known water source/spillage or one of our well documented MGR 'mystery' leaks?
Is it therefore possible the tuner got a soaking around the same time - if it sat in a puddle then it may have subsequently deteriorated over time. Have you got anyone local willing to swap out their working tuner to run a comparison?
If it works normally then you have an answer, your tuner is duff for whatever reason. If it still acts up then perhaps there is a intermittant wiring fault either at the multiplug or chaffed wiring elsewhere - go hunt the thimble time.....

Yes the SatNav got wet 7 years ago. That was taken out and never put back in. Must have been rainwater thru boot side window, which hasn't happened again. Got a TomTom instead in April 2013. But the radio & cassette worked just fine for all those years until a year ago.
Don't have anyone useful to do a swap & test. Could get the car electricals guy over again after Covid virus settles.

So from what you say, there is no point in my buying the Hi-Line display unit (YIE000310PUY) because it may be the tuner - which is a separate component.

Just a thought - could it be that Mr Rat has nibbled away at the wiring? In which case, it would be at front of car …...

The display is just that, a (dumb) screen. All the issues you've described are related to the tuner in the boot or possibly a wiring fault i.e. chaffed wire since you mentioned that it has been intermittant.
There must be someone on here not too far away willing to do a quick swap/test - ask the question (and save yourself some dosh in the process)

Just goes to show that the car electricals man (that my own garages uses) was not as good as I thought. He never went into the boot to check the tuner! Jeez.
