Just a quick reply whilst having my lunch, a better update later with pics.
I've got the front plate off, I could almost believe a mouse had settled in there!. Even some deposits that at 1st glance look like wood shavings, though I think they are shreds from the belt. The water pump is out, there looks to be a very small dribble below it, and I'm changing it anyway. The tensioner pulley is free (but noting the previous wear position) but the piston is stuck on its operating lever. Next job is to get that off. The amount of deposits I've cleared out is astonishing.
