some photo help please

I recently started using a panasonic lumix fz8 but the pictures keep coming out "grainy". like the pics in this thread http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...826#post392826

can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong or is it a case of me needing a better camera?

Don't look to grainy to me,
but check that your camera is set for the highest resolution / highest quality available.

A bit of increased contrast and sharpening in post processing helps.

You have a decent camera so no need to get another. The light didn't look too good but that can't be helped. Most images will benefit from some processing rather than just loading them up as they come from the camera. This is especially true if you use Photobucket as it doesn't do them any favours.

Hi

A few things to check:

1. Obvious as it may seem, check that the lens is clean as your pics appear to have a haze (more noticeable in some than others)
I find just breathing on the lens & wiping with a cleaning cloth for spectacles (if you wear them of course !) does a great job.

2. Check your ISO setting (film speed in a 35mm camera). Most common setting is 100 or 200

3. Check in the camera settings for Sharpening/Softening. This should be set to Normal as any editing can be done in Photoshop if required.
This is particularly important if you are using a Scene mode like Soft Potrait.

Fred put me on to Picasa 3 the other week, it's free. If you select a picture and then just click "feeling lucky" it just does unbelievable things to improve the picture

I used Picasa for this. It is free from Google (you get 1GB of free web space too) and is very easy to use. In this instance the "I'm feeling lucky" button didn't do enough so I just adjusted the shadow slider and gave a click of sharpening. I would recommend Picasa to anyone who doesn't want to get bogged down in photo processing. It also catalogues all the images on your computer (but doesn't move them). Well worth having a look at.

I use Adobe PhotoShop which seems to have a solution for everything and is quite straight forward to use, once use to.
Can be a bit pricey though to purchase.
