new lens
I'm looking for a new 'walk about' general purpose lens for a canon 400d. anybody got any experiances of the Tamron 18-200? I don't want to spend a fortune so close to Christmas and this is a great price at the moment, but would this be better than the kit lens?

In my view, ANY lens is better than the thing that is provided. I'm quite frankly surprised that Canon would lut their name to it.
I use the ES 28/135 as my walkround lens. It suits me perfectly. I did have the opportunity to try the Tamron you mention and as I recall, it was up to Tamron's usual standard in terms of robustness, reliability and quality. I think the Canon beats it but that's a subjective view of course |

The canon has image stabilisation. My wife uses the Sigma 18-200 OS which gives great results. Price about half way between.

thanks for the POTN links, I haven't been on there for a while. The Sigma would be the better choice but funds don't allow at the moment - too close to christmas and a Cooper S needing some serious work soon!

I have allways been a fan of the early Tamron lenses, the build quality and optics are superb.I bought one of these new 26 years ago, attacked by fungus but luckily found a MINT one on E-bay a few weeks back.It is as good as my Nikon one.If their modern lenses are of the same quality you have no worries.P.

I use a Tamron as my Zoon lens with my 350D and it's great.. I'm also on the lookout for something better as a walkabout lens..

Steve, what size zoom you got? as I am going nuts looking through lens review's, was looking at the new sigma 70-300mm but cannot find anyone who has anything to say about it.
