Default Boot Lid Rubber Stops??????

I was trying to locate a rattle from the back end of my saloon. I wondered if the boot lid was the source. When it is closed there is some up and down play at the front corners of the boot lid (where it comes close to the rear window). I have always been aware of little rubber stops in the corners and always assumed they located against the hinge mechanism to prevent play. As I was tracing a rattle I examined them more closely and realised they don't butt up against anything. What are they for? I have just stuck some firm thick foam rubber blocks in those corners that will press against the corners of the boot rim but I haven't been out in the car yet so I don't know if I have fixed the rattle.

The rubber stops half way along the left/right edges have a spiral 'thread', so you can adjust them. If they're not right, they typically cause a 'machine gunning' noise when operating the boot lock. I believe they should be in contact with the body when the lid's closed.

Hi T-Cut. The rubbers I am referring to are not the large spiral adjustable ones, they are the tiny ones at the front corners.

Are we taking about item 5 on this Rimmers page, CKM000050. Could be they are just getting tired, losing their flexibility. They're only 90p each, search for the part number they're cheater elsewhere

Hi Steve. Yes they are item number 5. They are still present and not perished. I have now established that the rattle I am trying to locate is not coming from the boot lid but I am still intrigued to know what these little rubber plugs are for. Rimmers call them buffers but they don't touch anything when the boot lid is up or down.
