Essentially the S plate Rover 75 saloons are known as Pre-Launch cars because they were produced for demonstration and press use, prior to the mass production of the vehicle.

They were in the main owned or looked after by MG Rover management and employees, and can be easily identified by their VIN numbers. The last 6 digits are the unique numbers assigned to each car, and any pre-launch car's VIN will begin with a 0 as it's 6th from last numeral.

The first mass production 75 to roll off the assembly line in Cowley has a VIN number ending in 100001. This car left the factory on 6th May 1999 and was a 2.5 v6 connoisseur in Wedgwood Blue.

It now lives at Gaydon Motor Heritage Centre

The Pre-launch cars were generally well specified with features, but obviously there had to be examples of the entire range for demonstration purposes, the 1.8 being sold by Thomas, is a fairly standard model, without Sat Nav etc, but does have (I believe) the rather unique 'black' central locking centre console switch surround instead of the more familiar wooden version.

Otherwise I think there is very little change in build quality between these early cars and their Launch counterparts. What makes these cars special is that they are the earliest examples of their kind and were not on general sale to the public at the time of their manufacture.

Thanks for that info Reebs - I never realised that was the first production 75. I had a good look at it last year when I first started work at Jag - it was part of our induction. Unfortunately it was buried somewhat out of view which is a shame as the last ever Rover built, the Firefrost 75 CDTi, is on clearly on display and has its own plaque.

Would be nice to have them side by side I would've thought.

Yes, I'm sure displaying your S reg at meets would be welcomed by many. Some of the Pre-launch cars were later released for sale by MG Rover through the dealer network most noticeably through SMC Rover in Slough, who regularly took delivery of many S & T reg '0' VIN cars.

In fact my very first 75, a Connoisseur SE in Copperleaf Red (number 12 in the list below) was one such Pre-launcher purchased from SMC Rover, but at the time I didn't know about such things. Here's a list of just some of the Pre-launch cars that we know about.....

1) S527 OVP VIN 001047 Built 29/09/1998

2) S751 LJW (The Car featured on Driven, now crushed) VIN 001100 Built 27/10/1998

3) Roverowner's LHD Arden Green Connoisseur (the earliest example in the club I believe) VIN 001149 Built 12/11/1998

4) S750 LJW (GateKeepers Car) VIN 001194 Built 24/11/1998

]

5) S525 OVP (The Clubs S Reg) VIN 001196 Built 25/11/1998

6) S457 AOX VIN 001367 Built 04/01/1999

7) S473 AOX VIN 001384 Built 04/01/1999

8) T207 JOP (The 1st 75 I almost bought from SMC Rover in Slough) VIN 001481 Built 13/01/1999

9) T78 MOA (Rabett_Rover's car) VIN 001482 Built 13/01/1999

10) S594 AOX (Your new Car) VIN 001492 Built 14/01/1999

11) S543 OVP VIN 001536 Built 25/01/1999

12) T385 JOP (My first 75) VIN 001598 Built 08/02/1999

13) T499 JOP (Starman's saloon) VIN 001801 Built 02/03/1999

With many classic cars the earliest ones of particular models are the most desirable, the 75 is a modern classic in my view, so therefore to have the earlier models is desirble.
So I am glad that you have bought this car and will be saving it from being broken (no offence Thomas)

Well done - I'm so glad it's been saved..

If you need help with transport, I come down the M6 most Thursday afternoon from Chorley, and could help with a lift further south. Maybe someone else could ferry you on from Warwick.

Hope you enjoy it.
