Next question - do I just push the banjos/knuckles onto the metal balls by force, or is there a trick to it? I don't want to break the new cables - that would be silly.

If you can't get them on by hand it can also be done with slip-joint pliers or water pump pliers (Not sure what they are called in the UK)
This is on an MGF but is similar

I'd call those water pump pliers.
The handles on my water pump pliers are probably too long to do it when the gearbox is back on the car - access to the gear change arm (which Rave calls a 'quadrant' for some weird reason) is lousy on the KV6. This is the best view I got of it! (and that's with a long macro lens ) A lot easier with the gearbox off the car but then the cables will be in the way when lifting it and bolting it back on. Things would be simple if the 'quadrant' could be taken off the box - but it can't (not without a lot of hassle anyway). Last edited by Blink; 24th November 2020 at 12:47.. |

Went to a breakdown this afternoon in Leyburn with a floppy gearlever and stuck in gear on an 05 diesel. Stripped out the battery box and fitted a repair clip to the broken end. Great I thought, a repair that will probably last the life of the car . Tried the lever and it was still flopping backwards and forwards so the issue was also in the selector box ! Not wanting to remove the exhaust and heatshield and open the box just to find it's not repairable in the pouring rain , I recovered it to his 77 year old mechanic who has a garage up a farm track in Northallerton. He's going to get a fright at the price of those cables !
