@ Caskin, did you at any time have the first cable off , because if you havn't the clip shouldn't have moved, its a press in fit, and uses two ears to clip into place, they very rarely break, often mechanics will take it out, and lose it, or forget to put it back in, the only other thing i can think of is it wasn't put back on right, and didnt clip fully home,in qhich case it will be lying in the handbrake mounting somewhere, i looked on line and they appear to be rare as hens teeth,

If the cables are still attached at the drum.end, this is the only other place where it would 'give slackness'. Sent from my SM-A600FN using Tapatalk

Hi Martin NO, at no time have I interfered with cables in any way, but have carried out countless handbrake adjustments on Rovers owned over many years,(has always been car of choice from the first time I saw one.) And throughout all those adjustments this is the first time I have incurred this problem!!!
It will be a miracle if the black clip is not in place, but there's just a chance, so I'm going to follow Arctics instructions and take a peek. Although the car is in remarkable condition I have come across a few shoddy servicing items (done by a garage to original elderly owners!!)so wouldn't be surprised if it was not there. Also as far as the black clip is concerned there is more than one way of skinning a cat!! Bit like hens teeth really!

Thanks i have just replied to it, i have been thinking about your issue, and best to go back to basics, first, remove the handbrake gaiter, check the amount of thread showing beyond the nut, it should be 25mm, with the wheels chocked, take the handbrake off, pull on the cable, does it move? if yes, then you need to look more in depth, because something clearly is amiss,
When you adjusted the drums, did you turn the wheel on the adjuster until the shoes are almost binding you should only just be able to turn the wheel by hand, the shoes should be dragging slightly, My money is on the either the compensator having stretched, or the clip wasn't properly in, and its fallen out, |

Also as mentioned after I adjusted rear shoes,(which I have done on Rovers any amount of times) I then went back to the car to carry out final adjustment and that's when I discovered adjustment was impossible, as the cable/adjuster was free to move back and fore?? So BACK to the dreaded BLACK clip??? Weather ha improved slightly here only 6" of water now so perhaps I can crack on and follow Arctics directions to see if short cable is in place or not!!! Plus I think the hint from Arctic reference hens teeth that he just might have the odd black clp laying around. Get back later and thanks.
