Default Manual heater controls

I have digital ATC in the car at the moment, but would very much like to switch to manual controls (preferrably dual zone) once I have the carpet out.

Does anyone know if it’s possible to alter the basic single zone manual heater box to operate as a dual zone unit?

I believe the dual zone manual heaters are like rocking horse brown, with the single zone manual heaters fitted in most of the Classic models.

So, is there any chance of converting one of the single zone heater assemblies to dual?

If not, I might just go ahead and switch to a single zone manual heater set-up, as I find the digital ATC too fiddly for making adjustments

I take it that there’s no need for any T4 work when going from digital to manual and that that’s only needed when going the other way around?

Really wish they’d fitted manual heater controls throughout the range

Cheers,
Karl.

I believe it is quite involved and very labour intensive, involving the removal of the dashboard. Imagining the task, the thought of threading and routing the cabling for the various controls give me shivers. lol

Last time I read about it, someone said it would probably be easier to buy a car with it already fitted and use it instead lol.

I would like the manual control myself, but after almost 4 years of the ATC, and 7 years of some form of electronically controlled heating system, I am only now starting to get the hang of it lol.

I had single zone manual, and fancied dual zone

When I asked Trikey, he said it was possible but would be a massive job.

Terry at TSAutos converted a manual to ATC, and it is documented somewhere. As mentioned, a big job.

Yeah, I think it’s a pretty big job. But I’m going to have the whole carpet and centre console etc. out at some stage (which is easy enough), so removing the dashboard shouldn’t be that much more involved

Then draining the coolant and disconnecting the heater box should be possible..

I know there’s more work to add an ambient temp sensor and sunlight sensor to the dash (+ T4 coding) when going from manual to digital, but no such work should be required when going from ATC to manual controls?

I just find the manual controls a real draw

But I’m probably being a bit too ambitious for my skillset

Cheers,
Karl.

Mrs Noc would agree with you there Karl. The only thing she wants changing on her Connoisseur SE is the ATC - she finds the manual dials much easier to use.

The dashboard and support bracket takes about half an hour to remove once the rest of the interior is out, it’s not a terrible job, just time consuming and you need plenty of space to put all the items.

Thanks Andy.

Yeah, I’m getting decidedly undecided about the whole idea, now

I reckon it’d be straightforward enough (presuming no T4 wizardry is required), but there again, I’m probably better off just leaving well enough alone

Cheers,
Karl.

Yeah, I don’t see what benefit was envisaged with the fiddly digital system

But I guess it’s not that big of a deal

From my experience I feel the climate control system not just fiddly but positively dangerous as I defy anyone to say they can alter where the warm air goes on a cold morning without taking your eyes off the road.

I had a duel zone manual system on the old Discovery and it was infinitely safer to alter the settings on the move because it could be done by feel. I knew where demist was on the dial and right next to that was a dial that controlled the fan. The another two dials were the temp dials.

Everything was tactile friendly and so much easier to use when driving.

I would LOVE to convert to a manual system - dual zone would be nice and look better but the reality is for me that the climate control is the very worst design flaw on our otherwise fantastic cars.
