Default Rust Trap

Noticed on the later cars the shrouds for the fuel vent lines running up the inside of the OSR wheel arch are shorter than the earlier ones:

So water, salt, mud and all gets into the conduit pipe, which over time leads to this:

I made up a plastic cover to put a stop to it and pop riveted and siliconed it in place:

Cut a new bit of metal from some old scrap double skinned exhaust pipe:

And fitted it:

Will cover with tape for a bit of added protection. Luckily it is a diesel so no need to worry about any petrol fumes getting into the cabin if there are any fuel leaks. If you have the short conduit then worth lifting the rear seat base and checking your pipe.

Another one for the 'it's springtime and it's getting warmer and drier' list.

Did have the seat off a few months back to refit the fuel pump seal (which the previous owner had fitted all wonky and caused a fuel leak) and that pipe looked fine - fortunately!

WOW.--That's quite an area of rust. The car must have been stood some time unused to get that bad. Or the owner wondered why he was down to 5 mpg. The rest of the fuel lubricating the tarmac under the car.---

It's only the vent pipes going up to the filler neck and rollover valve in that conduit pipe Jon, so no risk of any fuel spilling out.

.
Iirc the later ones (WJK100176) have an extra fixing flange - six instead of five.

Sorry, five instead of four.

Bottom one is the later WJK100176. Top is the one fitted to Mk1 cars. Neither of them seal properly along the edges.

The new one that I got from Rimmers (probably a year or two ago, now) had 5 fixing flanges but was a longer shield than the one originally fitted to my late 2003 car.

Fairly useless info.. but info, nonetheless :-)

Cheers,
Karl.

That's good for anyone buying a replacement - definitely the long one that you want.
