Default 2000cc 75 TD not starting up

Hello,

every once in a while my 1999 2000cc 75 TD does not start up.

A few days ago I had the following:

  • the car did not start up; or it did start up and then the engine stopped after a few seconds.
  • I waited an hour or so and tried again
  • again, the car did not start up. After a few attempts, it did start up, and this time I pressed the speed pedal a bit to try and keep the engine on.
  • It worked, and a large amount of blue smoke was put out.
  • The following days I could verify that normally no smoke is emitted.

I am at a loss here, so this is to ask for possible ideas!

Many thanks, kind regards,

Enzo

Hello, thank you so much for your reply
the fault occurred again, after having tanked to a different fuel brand...
I was wondering if electromagnetic interference could play a role, as the occurrence of faults intensifies at the change of seasons
Perhaps I should ask my garage to disable the alarm system completely
Really, I'm at a loss...

Assuming you have no engine cut outs while driving and its just a non start issue i would consider a failing Cam sensor Worth a try .

You also mention ambient temperature - when she fails to start does the rev counter/tachograph flicker at all - if not you could have a failing Crank Sensor and they do fail when hot.

Indeed, no engine cut out when driving! I will follow your suggestions and ask a garage.
Thank you very much!

Although it would be rare for an M47 engine. Do people want to comment on the possibility of a seal or head gasket letting in oil when parked? The comment about blue smoke which then clears in other makes of engines would make me think oil has trickled through from a worn out seal or head gasket when parked? And the problem would not occur once diving?

I had a similar issue many years ago with my diesel. Tried many things and was found to be a faulty fuel sensor relay switch. Its another fuse box located under the passenger footwell. You have to be a contortionist to see it upside down but worth a very cheap fix if it is.

I had my car towed to 3 local garages and no one could fix it as they didn't know what it was. One garage blamed the ECU, sent it off for testing and it was absolutely fine.

I had my car transported to an exceptional gifted mechanic in Stourbridge called Terry Shaw. He had the car up and running in 20 mins after it arrived at his home. After a year and a half sat on the drive and garages had no idea why it wouldn't start, i was delighted. He saved her from the brink of being scrapped.

Only a suggestion and always happy to share

Yes Terry's knowledge of these cars is immense. He has now moved to Shropshire.

Hi all. I am reading this thread with interest. As you all know I am having a few issues with my CDT too. Can anyone point out the exact location of the fuel sensor relay in the passenger footwell. It's worth me changing it to see if it cures a problem. Muchly appreciated. Dave.

I have a fuse box that doesnt match any of the ones in the Haynes book. There are 4 relays to the left of the fuses that are all identical.
