Seeing previous posts are you going to remove your existing head and have that looked at and perhaps replace any bent valves? Would you like to try having your head looked at first? I'll still have the car I suspect for a couple of weeks so I'm not about to get rid of the car.

Keep it earmarked for me - I'll let you know in the next few days or so.

I only get time at the weekends and beginning of the week.
Will re read the Haynes manual on how to do it

Ok, so I think I have a plan of action.

Terry has referred me to EC Engines of Brierley Hill, who have quoted me £425 all in for a complete top end rebuild (which includes a replacement HG) and recovery from my address.

That's £800 cheaper than what Summit quoted me for.

Things are looking up. Excellent. Just to avoid any nasty surprises, I'd drain the oil and coolant into clean containers to look for cross-contamination before committing to starting any big work. Fingers crossed for you.

Cheers,
Glenn

What's fantastic to see is how many members have rallied around you and helped in all kinds of ways - from mechancal advice to useful contacts to moral support - what a brilliant community this is. I'm pleasantly not surprised but still surprised. Good luck with the rebuild - these things they come to test us!!

This place has been a Rover owners Holy Grail, and I'm proud to be a member of it. I just wish I had one tenth of the knowledge these guys have!

Update*

Further inspection of the head has ruled out piston damage, however the valves had actually broken on contact and damaged the head itself, so a replacement head has been found and is being fitted.

Cost difference will not be much more thankfully,

Well since there was only ever 36 of this colour and spec built, I thought it was worth it.
