Let's be honest here Royal Fail are useless they complain about everything.

If I'm sending stuff, I nearly always use a courier as they pick up from my house.

These people sell Rover 75 pretensioners and use UPS.

Airbags and pretensioners operate by a heating element acting on pellets of Sodium Azide which very very quickly produces Nitrogen gas to either inflate the bag or operate the pretensioner

Whilst not explosive in nature the violence caused by the rapid expansion can cause a lot of damage.

The other problem is the Sodium Azide itself I've posted on here about this before, it's an extremely hazardous material, if the airbag or pretensioner was damaged in transit then there's a danger that the Sodium Azide pellets could be released.
Even a small amount can make you very ill indeed and can kill as it's easily absorbed through the skin especially if it gets wet.
So be careful if you're climbing around in scrapyards if the vehicle is heavily damaged!

That's why they can be difficult to post, lots of firms just won't take them.

Saying that I received one I bought from eBay it came via Hermes, don't know if they told them what was in the package though

Default Rave info

For info, there are diagrams of the front & rear pre-tensioners on Rave pages 75-21 and 75-22 (Workshop Manual > System Description & Operation). The cutaway on 75-21 shows how nitrogen drives the piston along the tube, causing the buckle to be pulled down towards the anchoring point.

NB. Safety note. Service Procedures > Restraint Systems has various warnings in red text, e.g. Don't lean over a pre-tensioner when removing or installing it. / Don't block the end of the piston tube. / Disconnect battery & wait 10 minutes before doing any work on the SRS system.

So, I am travelling from Derby to Kent, I can collect and deliver the said items. How do I ensure it is safe?

Does it need to be in a steel box or something? (btw I haven't got one at the moment!)
How is it disabled so that its safe to transport?

Advice please?

Cheers, Muttley

Many thanks.

I would suggest a steel or other metal box (a metal biscuit tin should be enough?), just to be safe. Belt and braces and all that.

This pretensioner is mechanical (rather than the electrical version MG Rover has). So this type has a spring and weight.

As I understand it, when high enough forces overcome the spring's force it releases the striker that then ignites the "charge", tightening the cable.

As the pretensioner is new and boxed, I believe it is "safe" from the factory. There is an internal locking pin to stop the striker from moving.

So I would just be sure to not get in any "wacky races" on the drive down.

Default Part arrived safely.

Just to close this thread.

Huge thanks to Paul, I now have the part.
