I don't recall hearing of any mass shootings in the states this year but
have a look here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...States_in_2020

trump thinks more guns are the answer to shootings. % wise I guess that could be proven. 10 guns = 7 mass shootings 20 guns = 13 mass shootings.

it has been mentioned before that Americans were buying guns "in preference" to food.
Is that to protect what they have or to steal from others

in the western world how does a country with a gun culture compare for those where guns are not a right, eg USA V UK

Lots of Americans feel very vulnerable in a crisis situation if they aren't armed.

Remember being in the path of a hurricane in Florida, we remained instead of evacuating along with a couple from Texas, he was really concerned that he didn't have his guns with him, told him it wouldn't do any good to shoot it if it hit us, but he was really concerned in case of any public disorder afterwards

Easy to criticise from here. There is seemingly a totally different attitude there, usually as a result of experience. To live in a peaceful neighbourhood is tantamount to an invitation to many of the dispossessed and rootless. Or just plain criminal.

I've never raised my hand to anyone, other than boxing club at school (!), but I know if my family were in danger I would not hesitate to use whatever means at my disposal to deter or ultimately stop anyone from harming them. I’m basically anti-gun but when the society in which you live is feral, which though is not everywhere but is in many areas, I would take any legal action I could.

There are precautions that the gun-smiths could take. Like embedding micro chips in critical components, after all we don’t object to the millions of phones that contain them! That could identify where a particular gun was when it was fired and, critically, where it was located when the whereabouts of the owner was needed, registered or not.

A work colleague used to live in the USA, he has told me numerous tales of why you need a gun. His next door neighbour was broken into, he heard a noise and went to investigate, his wife heard a gunshot and went down stairs to find him dead.

He was out shopping and as he approached a small shop two guys came out shooting back into the shop, my mate hit the ground and the shooters got into a car and drove off at speed. When he got up and looked into the shop there was several people in the shop that were wounded.

Finally one of the people he worked with stopped at a red light traffic light, some one got out of the car in front, came up to him aiming a gun at him. He got out and the car was stolen.

This was in a period of less than a year in Boston, this is an area considered to be low crime.

you need a gun to go robbing, was that the point you were making?
The more people that carry guns the more the chance of someone being shot for something stupid... giving the bird, even defending yourself could lead to you being shot instead of robbed.
I cant see the USA being rid of guns and mass shootings for years to come.

Guns to protect you at home..... as long as the gun stays at home and you can only fire on someone inside your home.... I think I can live with that but may need to give it more thought

I wasn't trying to make a point but just explaining there reasoning behind them thinking they need a gun.

He reckoned the problem is it is considered so normal to have a gun they think you odd if you don't have one, some of his workmates even had guns stashed in there cars to ''protect'' themselves.

He got pulled over by a police officer and you are told to keep your hands in sight at all times. He reckoned once was enough as he felt any wrong movement would have meant he could have got shot.

A gun is owned to protect you from abuse.
That can be from anyone overstepping their marks, including your own government.
There is one good reason Americans have guns, and that is the British government. They learnt the lesson. Read some history.
And while everybody use America as an example for or against gun control, why don't you look at Switzerland?
Arguably the most civilized democracy in the world, and literally armed to the teeth.
And one of the most peaceful as well.
