I have the Kenwood Kdc-bt43u, it's a great unit, works with IR steering controls, has usb, aux, Bluetooth streaming and built in parrot the big plus for me is it looks like a standard fitted unit

What was your OEM unit, was it a KRC-394? |

It worked straight out if the box, no need for any extra anything, it's as if it was factory fitted

I had the rubbish Kenwood tape deck they all come with.
I've since had 3 or 4 different Kenwood headunits, all have worked with the IR controls with no problem - it's not actually a steering wheel control, it acts like a Kenwood remote control - which are pretty much universally compatible with Kenwood HU's. The only problem I've got is that my latest one has a flip-down front (CD's can only go in behind the faceplate) which means it sticks out a bit too far so I've had to pull the IR sender out a little. I've got a Kenwood KDC-W6051U fitted currently (not recommending it fits your needs, mind). |

Great, so it sounds like I could probably take my chances on most of the Kenwood bluetooth range and as long as they can accept IR codes then chances are I'll be ok. Thanks
Just had a load of (expected) car bills: MOT, major service, car tax and insurance, so I'm feeling rather poor right now. I'll keep an eye out and see what comes up second-hand and if no luck I might buy new come next pay day. One more question... do these Kenwood units come with an external mic for the parrot hands-free calling function, or is that something you need to buy as an extra? |

Mine came with external Mic, sound quality is certainly adequate, I would say quite good, it is certainly powerful enough. It supposedly comes with connections for a subwoofer set up though I haven't yet installed one so haven't looked.

Just spotted this.
Dad’s car has a KRC-394 fitted. It has steering wheel controls, that don’t work. It also has the wiring and mounting for a CD changer in the boot, but the changer itself isn’t there. Is the KRC-394 a standard fitment? Should it work with the steering wheel controls? TIA
