There is greater cohesion to the mk1 but it lacks the modernity of the mk2. While the facelift wasn't as extensive as it needed to be, the mk2 looks reasonably fresh even now whereas the mk1s look dated. The facelift was particularly successful in altering the visual proportions back end to reduce the taper of the 'boat tail' and make it squarer.
The ultimate 75 would have the build quality of the earlier cars combined with the sharper chassis and styling elements of the later cars.

I own a facelift model, I'm not particularly bothered about the outside looks to be honest. It's the inside I see the most.
If I was pushed, I would say i probably prefer the front end of a mk1, something not quite right with the facelift front end, can't really put my finger on what it is. The ridiculous gap at the front of the bonnet doesn't help. However, if I ever decide to change the front end it would be for the best front end of them all, the mk1 MG ZT! That's my favourite front.

I'm quite partial to the facelift since I own one. The MK1 looks like a lovely classic, whereas the facelift looks relatively modern. Each has their place. I think the worst thing about the facelift is project drive, if the powers that be had ditched this idea like the hot NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD- it was, then the facelift, dare I say, would have been the better choice.
I also think the facelift works better on the ZT, whereas the 75 is more suited to the MK1. Last edited by Nick91; 17th February 2021 at 22:34.. Reason: The naughty word began with T and would leave someone's backside, hardly naughty :D |

To answer the OP question, apparently not.
After 40 years of P6's, my first 75 was a facelift and very happy I was with it. Then I saw a Mk 1 that lived just 250 yards from my place. It used to be parked in the driveway and I'd passed it every day for eight years and couldn't resist an admiring glance. One day it was parked in the road and in its place in the driveway was a new BMW. A note dropped through the letterbox asking if it was to be sold produced an email reply of Yes. It would be fair to say my driving is at best sedate and at my time of life I'm not in a hurry to be anywhere else so am unaware of any performance differences. Nowadays, the later model seems just a bit, well, brash, the influence of the new owners becoming just that bit more obvious. Each to his own, but I'm quite happy. Certainly the looks from other drivers in the car parks are encouraging.

I have had three 75's: a 1999 2-0 V6 Club SE saloon, a 2002 CDTi Connoisseur SE Tourer and a 2004 Contemporary SE CDTi Tourer. The first two were bought new and the last had 6,000 miles and I use it daily (now 260,000 miles). I have been happy with the quality of them all. The seats on the first two (one fabric and one leather) look much nicer and I believe are better quality but the Contemporary seats are more comfortable for driving although the driver's seat is now sagging.
I agree the Mk 1 looks better at the front as the grille looks like a grille rather than an add-on accessory but I prefer the look of the back of the Tourer as a Mk 2. I also think the Mk 2 is ageing better. |
