Basically if you are handing your car over as a px to the garage with its current plate you can take the new car away as is, afaik both cars must be insured and taxed or tax application doc included to transfer a plate so you might as well be driving it whilst waiting

Problem the dealer has is if he takes your car as is he must sit on it till the transfer completes -dead money so he is probably reluctant to do so.

I would have dealt with my own car separately first by putting the plate on retention (costs an extra £25) so you were then as soon as its new number arrived free to immediately PX it for whatever or sell it privately then you could have assigned the private plate at any later date up to one year to the Lexus.
Keith I am just as confused as you. I am Part exchanging my car for the Lexus the garage are dealing with the cherised plate transfer....but they still haven't sent off the application so I think I shall just get it off them tomorrow and do it myself. Amanda said to me on the phone the garage is happy to have it on its private plates they aren't that boverd.

So fingers crossed I will have it by tomorrow.

Must admit I take mine onto retention, change cars, then do it myself.

But one of my colleagues has just bought a (new) car, and was driving her old one on her own plate right up to p/x, and drove away from the dealers (main Audi dealer) with her own plate on the new one. Don't know whether it's different for new cars, though.

Thanks for the info everybody.

Just got off the phone from the salesman again and he is saying that he needs to speak to the managers because if they take our car they can't do anything with it because it will be on its private plates and they won't have the Logbook. But we have paid for the Lexus and its own according to the DVLA so surely its the garages problem.....they will just have to wait until the private plate transfer goes through to sell my car? If they hadn't had waited until yesterday to send of the transfer forms then it wouldn't take so long.

Where do I stand can I not just give them my current car and say well you will have to wait until the plates go over and drive off with the Lexus?

Regards
Tom

Ah thats what I thought was going on, your car to them is dead money
Yes you have paid for the new one but that includes the PX price

I guess they don't want to relaease it until the receive payment in full and that includes a PX they can trade on immeadiately.

Tricky situation now really as I suppose it is would be too messy to cancel the PX and pay the value of the PX in money then sell the Rover privately later.

I think all you can now do if they definately won't take your car "as is" is to wait

Hi Everyone

I am now one very happy bunny I now have a nice shiny Lexus IS200 parked outside my house!! They took the car, weren't to happy about it but they took it! Now just need to wait for the DVLA to transfer plates. Tomorrow I will be getting pics, automatic headlights are really good....the headlamp washers spray so far they even get the windscreen wet!! And its a dark interior but except from that its good. (Actually I will list good/bad points below....

Good Points
  • Headlamp washers
  • Auto lights (which are very handy)
  • 6 CD Changer in dash (no messing around in the glove box)
  • Wants to go....it just keeps on pulling and pulling
  • Electric fold in mirrors (when good for car parks etc...)
  • Large Wheels (They look very good!)
  • Sunroof
Im sure I will find many more things....

Bad Points
  • Dark Interior
  • Large wheels (more bumpy ride)
  • Headlamp washers (because they get everything wet not just the headlamps)
  • Its not a Rover 75 or MG ZT

Regards

Glad to hear they bit the bullet. No skin off their nose really, there's not much they could be doing with your 75 in the course of a day or two anyway.

Hope your new toy treats you well. They do get good reviews.

Thanks GG, well they've got to sort out the misfire first....I wish them luck with that!! They might just end up scrapping it or something what do you think?

I my experience the dealers are first class, treat you like a human being and you don't mind the price for services etc, not that you you will ever need them:lol: Probably send yours straight to the auction thats what most do now
