I had a busy day today.
What I did: Flushed the coolant, Drained the oil for 50% Added diesel and let the engine run for a moment, Drained the rest of the oil/diesel mixture, Drained the transmission fluid, Removed the oil filter, Repaired a little spot underneath the car, Checked everything I could see or reach from underneath the car, Cleaned as much as I could reach, Took out the sparkplugs (and again 1 broke...) Cleaned as much as I could from the top, Took off the oil pan from underneath the engine, Took out the engine mount for thorough inspection (turned out to be perfectly fine), Tried to find the thermostat so I could replace it... not gonna happen, Cleaned the oil pan thoroughly, Cleaned the underside of the engine as best as I could (with diesel and a brush), Refilled the gearbox with MTF94, Added Forte Diff and Gear Treatment to the trans oil, Cleaned all the bolts that had come from the car, Reapplied liquid gasket to the oil pan, Put new sparkplugs back in, Replaced the air filter, Replaced the interior filter (and checked the plenums), Put the oil pan back on the car, Put new oil filter on the car, Put some Shell Helix oil in the engine, Put new coolant in the system, Put Forte Top End Treatment in the engine, Put everything I forgot to mention back on the car after cleaning or inspection, Put the undertray back on, Titied everything up, Went for a little drive and decided that everything was awesome. Cleaned all up, put my clothes in the bin and then took a very long shower trying to get clean . Pictures by the story (because we all love photo's ): I still have 2 bottles of Forte that will go in the petrol tank when it's at 50%, but I can already tell that she runs smoother and has a little bit more bite. All ready for the trip to England this weekend.

You lazy little ***.
Seriously though: mighty fine work there. Did you add diesel to the engine oil as a flushing/cleaning agent? And does it work? |

After taking the oil pan off, I used a brush with diesel to clean the inside of the engine as much as I could, and I noticed very quickly that diesel is a very good cleaner. So I have a strong feeling that those people where right, and diesel really is a good aid in cleaning the engine. However, be careful with the small amount of oil/diesel mixture that doesn't leave the oil pan through the sump-plug. I left the car to drip for a few minutes, and when I took the oil pan off, I noticed that it still held at least 100ml (probably closer to 150ml). Adding new oil with the diesel/oil mixture still in there might have a negative effect on the oil.

I used diesel FUEL.
Mine still performs beautiful, but the oil was very dark. It probably did clean the engine very good when I used diesel fuel in the engine (see my other topic), but an engine gets dirty, there is no escaping that. So after a very thorough clean, It doesn't hurt to give it a nice clean every time you change the oil, just to stay on top of it and don't let it become very dirty again. You just don't need to do it so thoroughly every time. To be honest, I'm very curious what a reply/response will be from a mechanic when he/she sees the picture I made from the inside of my engine. I'd like to know if that looks normal, or very clean for a 15 year old (75.000km) engine.

Supplementary oil filters.
Back in my truck company days, we had some supplementary oil filters fitted on a loop from a tee piece at the oil pressure switch. They were a very fine micron filter which took extremely small particles from the oil. At oil change time, the old oil remained as clean as a whistle. The manufacturers claimed that the life of the old oil could be doubled (EDIT. Or even more!). As engine oil was relatively cheap (back in the eighties) we decided to ditch them as there was always a possibility of a leak in the pipework. Other (larger) companies did keep them on their fleets as they made economic sense for them.
EDIT see High Efficiency filters Mike

Today I took the car to MJN Motors in Brislington and he changed the ATF, rear discs, shoes and pads and lower arm rear bushes. He showed me the parts he'd removed (really in need of binning) and the (black) ATF. Also regassed the aircon and did one of those anti bacterial treatments. Found a leak in the cooling system that needed tightening up and a refill.
Told me when I get new tyres in a couple of days to ask them not to use the air wrench as the locking nuts on these are soft... What a nice guy, really seems to know what he's on about.

In the dark ages when I had my Montego, I took the sump off and was pleasantly surprised how clean it was at nearly 100,000 miles (Diesel engine). It was run on straight 30 grade oil. Never seen anything like your pictures in the many engines I have rebuilt or repaired. Must have been neglected for years.
