ZR 160 - why a turbo in a ZT?
This is probably a silly question, but I am right to think that the 160 ZR is Normally Aspirated 1.8 engine? and it produces 160bhp?
If so how? and why do we have a turbo? And I suppose the next question is why hasnt anyone used the ZR 1.8 with the ZT Turbo? Simon

ZR160 is a VVC,which is not ideally suited to hauling a big car around (so i'm told).The Turbo raises the pulling power of the standard 1.8.

1.8T = Company car drivers
MG introduced the MG ZT 1.8T to attrack the mass market of fleet car / company car drivers as for many the taxable benefit to be paid by driver stopped them ordering a V6. Likewise a lot of companies would not allow V6's on car lists.
The nasp 1.8 circa 120 bhp was fitted with low pressure turbo to produce a very drivable ZT. With lowever compression and the Garrat charger a 160 car was created. As soon as the cars came out I ordered one, as did thousands of others. Later in the decline of MG in a move to get as many cars sold as possible the ZT 1.8 nasp was launched. The K4 ening is a cracking engine and even with the extra weight the 1.8T was and is a very lively car to drive. However die to emissions rules the ZT never got to have the T16 engine which is a real shame as this was a true turbo rover production engine. However thanks to our greener european rules all the fun in motoring has gone..... Civic type R with crazy VTEC gone..... Focus T5 going...... |

Although the 160 VVC and the 1.8K T produce similar peak power,the 1.8K T was chosen for the 75/ZT because it has much greater torque than the VVC at low revs,something which is required to get a big heavy car off the mark.

There is a 1.8T ZR floating about. I believe it was an experimental car from Longbridge that was sold off when they went under.
It belongs to these guys (If you click on the 'Road Upgrades' section of this website it has some info...) http://www.zandf-tuning.co.uk/ |

Heres the info from that site on the ZR 1.8 Turbo . . . Our car happens to be the unique Longbridge factory prototype ZR built to test the K1.8 turbo installation, complete with Mems 3 management. We intend to offer ECU support for your own ZR and TF turbo projects, and may announce a complete installation package subject to demand. http://www.zandf-tuning.co.uk/
