Default Luk or Borg and Beck?

Hi folks,

I really appreciate the advice I've been given, on tackling the job of changing my clutch and I have decided to do it on the drive.

The question now though is: Should I buy LuK or Borg and Beck?

Any views on this?

Many thanks,

JS.

A recent thread that may be of interest. http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...d.php?t=184923

The situation is not clear. Luk - thousands fitted with a few reports of failure. B&B - hundred(s) fitted with no known reports of failure.

Many well respected professionals will only fit Luk.

It may be that some of the reported failures were due to incorrent fitting.

We sell both LUK and B&B in the factors where i work and honestly speaking, our customers do tend to ask for LUK first if it's available.

I've been here nearly 5 years, and have seen 2 B&B kits come back faulty to my knowledge, but never had an issue with LUK Clutch kits. However, i have seen a handful of LUK CSC (Concentric slave cylinders) come back, but not a B&B one yet. Bearing in mind, we do sell 3-4 kits a day. most days. so that really is a pretty low failure rate

They are both very good quality brands IMO and i'd happily fit either to my own car (If it had a clutch ). Its 6 of one, half a dozen of the other

As for the reliability of these clutches, just search the internet.
LUK spends untold millions on advertising worldwide, but that does not mean they don't have problems, it means brand recognition and Pavlovian responses!

As for their standard advice, always "driver error", even though the last clutch lasted 100000km and the new one 2000!! in the same car, same application and same drive.

There are untold stories similar to that.

Anyway, do your homework, and things will become clearer!

Here is a handy guide in any case!

Good, useful data - thank you. I'll bear that in mind.
Interestingly enough, I've just opened up a Borg & Beck kit, and found the clutch friction plate is marked LuK!

Sometimes LUK or Valeo will make clutches exclusively for certain cars as O.E, and dont release the patterns/rights for other manufacturers to create aftermarket kits. Hence, some brands can only re-box the O.E Parts, which is nearly always LUK or Valeo. Most notably, a lot of newer Peugeot HDi clutch kits are almost always re-boxed valeo.

There are fake LUK clutches on the market. Some of the supposed LUK failures were probably from fakes or badly installed clutches.
