No need to take bumper off, just remove the front right wheel, wheel arch protection and under engine shield. But it's not an easy job.

Make sure the system is de-gassed before you start work.

Nigel; be absolutely sure that you have the correct diagnosis before going down this road. It's rare for compressors to fail, although we recently heard of a burnt out clutch. What's wrong with your air con. and why do you think that the compressor is at fault?

Failure is quite common on the diesels, but less common on the V6 and 1.8 models.

I made this mistake about 6 years ago when i first started getting into cars on a Rover 416. Didnt know about the EA laws and thought 'theres only a couple PSi pressure in there'
I retrieved my socket from half way down the road after running my hand under water for 20 minutes to relieve the frost bite i suffered

Take to a reliable garage that does A/C re-gassing. Have them empty it and then drive it away to replace the compressor. Once you are done, go back to them for the refill.
Obviously, do not attempt to engage the A/C once the gas has been removed (although it should detect low pressure and fail to engage). The garage will be doing little different from a normal re-gas except for a longer break in the middle of the job. You must tell them that the compressor has been replaced when you go for the fill up so they can add the required amount of oil |
