Default Snap!

Searched through the forum yesterday regarding a problem I'm having and want to thank the OP for posting up the conclusion of his problem.
Same problem here and same cause, pulling the ABS fuse (32) fixes the sticky brake light... Now to see about getting the ABS fixed.

Default Brake lights stuck on.

I had the same problem on my previous 75. It turned out to be a broken wire behind the dash. Took 3 hours and nearly £200 to fix.

Thanks for replying, did you have the brake lights come on constantly when the key was turned in the ignition or only when turned to start the engine?

Wondering how common a fault this is.

Oh how if only it was the ABS unit.

I changed the abs unit for a second hand one from a forum breaker.

Fitted it all back and lights still stuck on when I put the abs fuse back in.

So do I try another ABS unit? do I take the dashboard apart and trace the wiring? Or do I scrap it as now I have a clutch fluid leak too. No idea where from but the slave cylinder pipes are metal.

Thanks for the update regarding the replacement ABS unit. Strange how nothing else on the car is affected by this.
My ABS and LSM male and female connectors are in good condition and given a squirt of electrical contact cleaner, plugged and unplugged a few times and allowed to dry before reconnecting. This had no effect on the problem.

Have not been able to find any wiring diagrams or explanations on how the ABS unit affects the brake light switch signal.

Finally solved!!!!!!

Fitted a genuine BMW brake light switch, popped ABS fuse back in. Lights work normal even with engine running!!!

Need to sort the ABS now though as ABS light stayed on but soooooo happy to have speedo and trip computer working again

Well done!

What switch did the trick and where did you get it from?

And which switches didn't work? may be worth making a list of those that do not work to save others grief.

Probably the hall effect switch at the brake pedal.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

Was a genuine BMW switch, in an MG rover packet from Rimmer Bros,
