The best hour I've spent, and the best money this week I even had a cup of coffee while I waited Anyway, talking of wasted time Simon, is your car boxed up yet? I'd love you to upload a video of your launch car running Brian |

Strange but the odour has a hint of sweaty feet about it!
Am hoping it is the pollen filter, that was the first non carbon activated one that I've used in a 75. Can't remember why I didn't use my usual choice ( from Opie oils ). |

Im a little stapped for cash at the moment so i was trying to see if i could relace/repair something before i went for your conversion which looks the business. I tried the test you suggested for the slow fan to run or a click but nothing at the front of the car,Also tried to test fast speed with a paper clip but still nothing. I got as far as removing the front bumper and was hoping to be able to access the fan control box but looks like i need to remove alot more to get at the control box and was running out of time so needed to put it back together to go to my work. the fan spins freely and i wondered what tests i could do with a multimeter once i open the fan Control box if i cant see anything obvious burnt away. Either to test the fan to see if its that or test the board inside. The fan looks like it has 4 wires going to it from what i can see,i also checked the connections under the wheelarch while the bumper was off and they all seemed in good condition. Any help would be much appreciated,Ive been reading loads on the forum but get confused with all the variations. thanks julian |

A worn down earth brush inside the motor can result in loss of these two speeds so this is the prime suspect at the moment. Quote:

That's what I like to hear Julian!
Buy the brushes from Engineering Carbon Products Ltd. in Croydon. Ignore the reference to "heater"; it's an error which unfortunately they haven't corrected. They are in fact for the radiator fan. Club member Greeners introduced me to this company who created their product using one of my old brushes as a pattern, so you can be sure that they are exactly right for the job. You'll find similar on e-bay but from an unknown source. These are best avoided. Some members have tried them and find that they only last five minutes. Club member Arctic has posted an excellent pictorial guide for this repair which you should find useful. Just one tip from me. When removing the motor end cap, be careful not to grip the body too tightly in the vice. The permanent magnets are made from a composite material which is brittle. Let us know how you get on. Simon

Just to update...
MAHLE carbon activated pollen filter (LAK243) arrived from Opie Oils, fitted and no more full hoover bag / sweaty feet / wet dog odour.
Made a note of the date, lets see how long it lasts. |

Thanks for the link to the Brushes,I havent quite got that far yet as i have been doing some tests on the car first to make sure it was deffo motor before i did anymore. I removed all the front of car to axcess the Fan control box and all looked like new inside no signs of any burning or smell from anything so while it was open i tested the Fan direct from a battery from a diagram on the forum ,the results were no slow fan,no medium fan but fast speed was working well and no noise. Whatever can this be that causes 2 speeds not to work,Will it be a relay or the pcb board do you think. thanks julian |

The diesel fan motor is the same as the petrol version, however the control box is different, the diesel ECM drives the fan output using a PWM signal In reality the diesel fan control is more robust than the petrol version, however the motor is just as vulnerable to brush and commutator wear as the petrol. Best of luck Brian |
