Hydra mount and front wishbone bushes
I've had a knocking noise from the front suspension getting progressively worse over the last couple months.
Following the advice on this forum I got underneath and checked the front wishbone bushes and found they were indeed worn out. I read Brians post on how to change them, and ordered my 18mm ratchet spanner. Whilst i was waiting i sprayed the bolts with wd40 fast release. Last week i ordered the new bushes and managed to loosen 3 of the 4 bolts and sprayed it a bit more. I also ordered a new hydra mount which I've been meaning to change for a while. I got the new parts yesterday and this morning visited Cabletie to borrow his hydramount tool. Many thanks Matt, nice to meet you. Despite having to mess around moving air con pipes the hydramount came out with any drama, and judging by the pictures, I think it was due!! Unfortunately I still can only undo 3 of the 4 bolts on the bushes, and this included managing to get my 2 foot breaker bar and 18mm socket on the bolt. I gave it another dose of penetrating fluid and see how it goes tomorrow, not looking promising. |

HI Andrew
It looks as though your lower engine mount as seen better days as well, the bolt you are having trouble maybe try to tighten up first a little then undo, this can work sometimes but be careful as you do not want to sheer it off, good luck.

while you are under the car check the ball joint and rubber boot at the hubs.
if they have had it, you may as well change the arm. be interested how you get on putting the new bushes on the arm macafee2 |

Because I was unable to hammer off the old bush I decided to remove the arm to get out from under the car and do get it off that way. I undid the lower strut pinch nut, but the bolt refused to budge despite much hammering, (just tap it out said Haynes, yeah right! ). By this stage I was getting a bit cheesed of especially after my piece of timber to wedge the arm fell out and hit me in the face More wasted time, so I put it back together and manged to destroy the old bush rubber with a screwdriver and wrench the outer off. I then got my disc cutter and cut the inner metal part of the bush so I could lever it off. Putting the new one on was simple, I smoothed then end of the arm with a bit of 400 grit and gave it a good dose of yellow 77 lube and filled the inside of the new bush. https://www.screwfix.com/p/ideal-yel...nt-950ml/44462 I use this all the time for cable pulling at work and it is excellent, also it won't react with rubber or pvc. I lined it up and with two hands gave it good squeeze/push and on it went, took about 2 minutes, Because I jacked the car up and had the wheel off I had to lever the arm a bit to the bolt holes in the bush to line up, but once they lined up all was fine, with the nearside anyway. Certainly easier to get the new one on. Just got to rear bolt undone on the offside now! I've had another go at the end but still nothing. |

I did mine a while back and had similar grief. I can only offer sympathy...

on one bolt i could not undo I put a piece of rope on the spanner then using a bolt of timber against the hub extra pull could be achieved

The worst one I ever had took 1 four foot extension pipe on the end of the spanner to crack the bolt.
Some can be very very stubborn.

Definitely a job to do with the car on ramps. I used a jack to lift the body a smidgen which helped me line up the bolt holes when putting the new bushes on.
