The cam profiles are indeed different but I believe the shafts are identical . They certainly look it The metal of the shafts is really brittle and is especially at risk on the ends where they have been machined out and made thinner . If you are not using the special tools , be very careful how you hold / restrain them if the sprockets are off....

Thank you Andy, I hope then it was just a bad batch - the only other (very rare) cases I have read of relate to problems after changing the belts which obviously can't be so if they've not been changed.

So it would seem there are at least 2 causes of this failure, but it is still not a common problem
