Default Just not that simple...

So I ordered casing and lid, and tried again. No problem with the new lid, but it didn’t fix the problem either. Had it on and off countless times, but the motor just clicks or graunches when I connect it to the car and press the actuator button.

Having spent most of the day on it, close to despair here… the only thing I haven't tried is fitting the new casing. And the problem with that is, to get the motor out of it you have to remove these tiny wires, which are in microscopic crimps, and I can see no way I might remove them.

Before I torch the car and get a Nissan Leaf, does anybody have any ideas how to open the crimps?

*UPDATE* OK, what happens is that it will spin its full ¼ turn clockwise, but if I reverse the wires and power it again, I can hear something that sounds like the gears slipping or something. This suggests that the gears are meshed OK (or it wouldn't spin clockwise), but are being allowed to move around by the worn casing when they try to spin the other way... what does eveyrbody think?

Seriously doing my head in here

my bits have also arrived and I will be looking at fixing my motor over the weekend, and will report back on my findings

OK, another afternoon dedicated to this hopeless task… but I’m going to report what happened here in case it helps Rob or somebody else who’s trying to do it.

The hole for the gear to locate in the case/cage which holds the motor is worn oval, so I assumed that was the root of my problems, and decided to move the motor and its little PCB to the new cage I bought. I’ll try and post a pic, but the site will only host a handful, so it depends on whether there’s something I can delete or not.

The little crimped bits on the ends of the two wires which connect to the motor are actually tiny spade terminals – you just pull them out of course I discovered this after I’d cut them, then realised that they still wouldn't clear the cage that the motor sits in, so I just gave them a pull to see what would happen

Anyway. So I fitted the motor to the new cage, soldered the wires back on etc – it spins very happily when connected to 12V. Greased the new gears, and located them carefully. Put the lid back on, giving it a bit of a wiggle to locate the gears OK.

Applied 12V… a clunk and a graunch. This began a saga of taking it apart, moving things slightly, putting it back together again.. and again… and again. No joy; sometimes the motor spun a little in one direction, but not the other; sometimes just grunted and clunked. Of course you're working blind, no idea what’s not meshing properly inside, so all you can do is keep trying. I even tried the old gears in the new casing.

After maybe 20 goes, I admit defeat. I mean, there’s no rocket science in there – just 3 little gears which turn each other.

I give up…

worth trying to spray some contact cleaner in the breather holes on the plastic cap of the motor. they can get covered in gunk and although they appear to turn when not under load they are quite weak.

Thanks, I'll give that a go tomorrow.

It really does sound like the gears aren't engaging properly though

Good luck with that Rob... but I'm willing to bet my house - no, wait, my Rover that yours will "just work" first time

OK, another update after a further 3 or 4 hours fiddling… I sprayed contact cleaner in the holes, as Stocktake suggested, gave it a spin – another spray etc. But trying to stop the little worm on the motor spindle from rotating when current is applied, it does feel pretty strong anyway.

Anyway, left it overnight to do its work, and tried again today – no joy. I then began an endless sequence of cleaning, re-greasing, and trying different combinations of old and new gears (the old ones look OK to my untutored eye, but the trouble is, you can’t see what’s happening when the case is assembled).

If I put the horizontal spindle (which meshes directly with the motor) in place, leave out the vertical spindle, and bolt the lid down, it whirrs away happily. The problem is when I include the vertical one – and there may be more than one problem. The fact is, it doesn't seem to fit well in the lower hole in the new casing, and is tight to turn. So I very gently reamed the hole out by sliding a slightly smaller drill bit up and down, re-greasing, and trying the spindle again, till it felt like it was turning freely.

Put it all back together – nope. Endless iterations and combinations ensued – eventually I found one which seemed to work. This consisted of using the original old vertical spindle with the new horizontal one (new case and cap also).

The motor dutifully rotated its ¼ turn back and forth, back and forth. I nearly threw a party. Reassembled it in the rest of the mirror mechanism, and… nothing but clicks. Took the motor off again, and on a whim, slightly loosened the Torx screws which hold the cap on… it started working again.

What all this suggests to me is that the gears and the new casing don’t quite match. I’m guessing – no more than that – that the vertical spindle is a tiny fraction of a millimetre too long, and jams when the lid is fully tightened, but really, *!@? knows.

With the lid screws left maybe ¼ of a turn loose, and the mirror reassembled and connected to the car, it graunches and grinds a bit of the way in each direction, then stops. This is just like it did before I started this sorry project.

Only worse.

Well done Roger , I’ve been down the same route as you today and my powerfold is still not working , and I agree with your conclusions .

My other thought is that the motor may not powerful enough so my next step will be to try and source a new motor for the mechanism and try that for power

Not much point buying a used mirror just to get a second hand motor with an unknown shelf life

Re the new bits we both bought the lid doesn’t appear to be any different to my own in terms of worm gear wear and the casings are not as well made as the originals.

The other option of course is to have skullcap folding mirrors as although in my opinion they are not as nice to look at as the bullets , the motors are more modern and designed better than the antiquated ones in the bullets and were fitted to later cars and I expect will be more reliable
