Hi Paul,
First of all well done for driving the car home and giving yourself time to reflect. My observations:

Or are you open to getting your own hands dirty doing some of the things we've suggested? Simon

Whats the best compression tester to get? Ive looked on e-bay and its given me a headache (1038 under engine compression testers!!!) Also if I test the cylinders ( all 6 as you say) and they come back OK will that discount the warped engine theory? Paul |

To answer a few of your queries first... I didn't see any white smoke myself other than that which id expect on a cold morning. I did see lots of white smoke when i bled the coolant and was revving the engine at between 1500-2500 but I thought that was normal given the high revs. And I've literally just turned her over and not a puff of white smoke. Not sure what caused it but the mechanic said it was whilst they were testing the car. With regards to the mayo I honestly cannot see any on the dipstick as I said wipes dark brown and smells of exhaust gas. I was just thinking about taking a trip across to Jules but lets see if I can do as much as I can do first to either eliminate or confirm the garages diagnosis. I'm about the delve into the Rave stuff, again, to educate myself on the oil cooler but if you know of any how to's that would be great. Also as I mentioned above a compression tester seems a must but which one, any suggestions Simon? And on a final note the thermos has a slight leak but I think we'd figured that out!! Cheers Paul |

Have you got mayo in the oil filler cap?

Then the most likely culprit is the oil cooler, disconnect both coolant pipes to it and join them together, top the header tank up once you've done it, then clean the oil cap out, take it for a spin and check the cap for mayo again, it should be alot less.
When the engine has been allowed to cool over night remove the coolant cap and have a sniff for exhaust gases, believe me, if the hg has gone you'll smell it. |

Yep the oil cooler bypass is on my list of things to try, however whilst i know what is involved I don't know the specifics like what do I use to connect the two pipes to create the bypass. Presumably its just a standard pipe from a plumbers but what is the size and spec? Cheers Paul |

Many moons ago when mine went the only thing to hand was a short length of hose pipe, it fitted perfectly inside the cooler hose's, jubilee clipped, it held for a good two weeks until I could replace the cooler.
