Default Insurance rates

Premiums should be coming down because motoring has been way down during COVID so claims way down. I guess they will put up citing mor3 claims on their business disruption policies. Yes, do not accept unjustified premium hikes but I guess many people do not bother and the companies rely on inertia.

In a previous post on this thread I mentioned that I was expecting my renewal quote very soon and it duly arrived. The price had risen from the £183.97 I paid last year to the £192.83 my insurance provider wants for the upcoming year. I did the rounds on comparison sites and got identical cover (with a lower excess) for £135.61. Result!

At least your renewal quote was pretty close to your existing policy but still proves the point to shop around!

Always follow Martin Lewis' mantra and don't auto renew.

When looking for a new provider, the sweet spot is between 4 and 2 weeks before. Too early and the quote will be higher, leave it too late and it will be higher. And don't just use comparison sites as Direct Line and Aviva don't use them.

Insurance companies don't have to justify their price hike, they can do what they want and all of them rely on inertia. If we're lazy enough not to shop around, then they'll sting us. My home insurance quote went up by £120 this year, but I saved £200 by pooling it on a multi insurance policy with the cars.

There is meant to be an investigation by the FCA into what's known as 'price walking' (slowly upping the price of your insurance year by year). Guess we can lean on our MPs to make sure this happens

Insurance renewal today, gone up from £382 to £424, phoned to ask why and could they do better as been a loyal customer for over 16 years. Told me that maximum no claims discount has dropped from 75% to 51% due to changes of broker. No thanks! Called my local broker, now insured on better terms, protected no claims and 3rd party for driving other cars for £262.00 with legal protection. Cannot believe how much I must have overpaid in the past. Well worth a phone call.

Going through a broker is well worth it in the majority of cases, especially if one has a, lets say, a blemished record.

Breakdown/recovery, legal fees, protected NCB et al all come at a cost as the insurer will "lay off" an amount of the premium to cover these "free" additions.
