found battery drain anyone know the cure

as i posted before i purchased a cdt tourer as a donor car but decided to work on it and hopefully put it on the road one of the jobs needing done was a battery drain what i've noticed is the bonnet and tailgate light on the dash stays on when bonnet and tailgate is closed i would appreciate very much if anyone could point me in the right direction as to what the fix is thank you in advance:

Checking the bonnet switch is operating correctly would be the first thing I would do - they are known to play up on occasion.

Are you saying the lights stay on even with the ignition switched off ??---( ie. constant consumption indicated by battery drain. )

Thanks for replying colvert no the lights go of when ignition is offthe just stay on when engine is running

That would mean that the bonnet is not closing fully and or the bonnet switch is in need of attention, check that the rubber cover over the switch is fully located in its fitting, if needed remove it and spray the switch with WD-40 or electrical contact cleaner, refit.

If they go out ignition off they can't really be classed as a battery drain, if they are on with engine running, the miniscule amount of current used to light an LED is insignificant.

The switches themselves don't turn the lights on or off they simply provide a signal to the central locking that something isn't closed fully, so as others have mentioned the problem is possibly with either of the switches, the bonnet is the favourite.

When this happens, also if any other door or doors are not fully closed you should get a warning beep of the horn when you try to lock the car, does this happen ?

From memory and I stand to be corrected, the switches can be by-passed by removing the multi-plugs and the two terminals connected, if this is done and the lights do the same this suggests wiring / control problems.

as mentioned in the comments above, the bonnet/tailgate open warning won't be causing any battery drain, as that warning only appears on the cluster when the ignition is on.

You should hear a beep from your alarm sounder (either a horn sound or a alarm tone if you have the BBUS alarm system when you lock the car as it's alerting you that it thinks either the boot or tailgate is open.

Annoyingly the IPK doesn't specify if it is the bonnet or the tailgate it thinks is open, but normally it's the bonnet as the bonnet switch gets water in it and stops working.

The only common cause of battery drain I can think of is if you have the highline sat nav head unit system the satnav drive in the boot not powering down when you switch off the car is a common issue. The drive will just stay on permanently spinning the disk, which is enough to drain the battery in a few days. I've come across electrics getting wet causing battery drain before as well.

Also check the condition of your battery, as I had one once that would no longer hold a charge very well, so although it would show 12v after charging, it would dump all the charge out overnight.

thanks Rick-sta for your reply if i disconnect the battery it lasts for a few weeks but left connected it only lasts a few days i had been leaving the bonnet just closed in the first position without fully closing which i thought could be the drain but when closing fully it is still draining i will certainly be looking into the sat nav thanks again

As in the posts above your first check should be the bonnet switch.---As for your battery. Do you know how old it is.--If it's getting on a bit it might no longer take a full charge. A battery will slowly discharge all by itself when not connected to anything.

If it's in poor condition then a few weeks will be enough for it to self discharge.

It needs fully charging for at least 24 hours then a voltage check done the following day.--It needs to show around 12.6 volts.

A garage Drop Test is the best way to check it and only takes a few seconds.

If you want to test it yourself then check the voltage each day.--After a week it should show at least 12.4 volts. If the voltage is dropping quickly it's a sign that the battery is on its last legs.--12 volts or under and it has had it.--
