No, that is not correct. There will in the vast majority of cases be a cylinder closest to the pulley, but not always!

The Lancia Lambda engine has number one cylinder on the o/s rear, number two is o/s front (and nearest the crank pulley), number three is n/s front and number 4 n/s rear (closest to the flywheel)! The firing order is 1,2,3,4.
The engine is an all aluminium OHC narrow angle V4 and was quite advanced when new (1920’s)

Being an ancient biker, I think one of the best engines to demonstrate what you say was the Woller flat four, basically designed and made by a father and son in a garden shed.

A fantastic bit of engineering especially the light weight, how it fits in the frame and other unique, at the time, features.

The starting of the Woller is unbelievable, I wish my old tweaked BSA DBD34 Rocket started the same, you either got it right, or you got a dislocated ankle, twisted knee, it launched you in the air, or the worst one was if you gripped the twist grip with your thumb under the grip, as you normally would and it misbehaved, you ended up with an interesting knee and thumb as the two met at speed and tried to bend the clip on. 🤣

It used to be fun when mates asked if they could have a go, yes if you can start it, but not tell them to put their thumb on top of the grip, or the most important part, nudge it over TDC before climbing on the kick start. 😱.

You might be right. I will look into that. And that makes me think of the Ariel Squarial, which I didn't even think of before! And I have a 1936 standing here!
But there is a far more well known engine that has this feature, of no cylinder being closest.
I will let you stew! If not got before the new year, i will let you know~~!!

There are quite a few similar things out there, such as those where two pistons have a dance in the same cylinder. 😉

I thought it best to name just one and let others have a go, alarm set for 00:00 on New Years Day for the answer.

How about the 1896 Raynaud?
It has two 2,000cc cylinders each at opposite sides of the car with the gearbox on the crankshaft in between the cylinders.

We refer to the cylinders as left and right instead of 1 and 2 when working on it.

The example I was thinking of was the Merlin engine, of particular interest to us for the above reason, and also that the Meteor (tank version of that engine) was built by ?? - Rover!
