just a quicky ..question

preparing to do my Dizzles auto box fluid this weekend , its not too cold again and its not persisting down.

Q. what size is the level plug nut/torx ?

Also not really sure which to do first , fluid or Solenoid

logic would say Solenoid first as some fluid needs to come out with the front cover off .

But as My solenoid resistance reading was not ridiculously out , maybe an overdue fluid change might sort out the hard gear changes ?

This is just a suggestion based on what I have done with auto boxes in the past, which is a double fluid change in order to achieve a flush.

I would do fluid change, drive for a few hundred miles, solenoid, then fluid change again.

Hi Chris,

From information noted from the forum, on early cars it's a 5mm Allen and on later cars a 14mm AF hexagon bolt. The torque is 14 Nm.

I had posted this a couple of years ago, and tested it via a meter, it seemed to work. When I was searching for the link to post onto your initial post regarding your auto problem, I discovered another post (after I had found and rushed to post mine) another member had tried this and installed it a few years before I did. Whilst the solder remedy worked, it failed again in a matter of weeks, unfortunately. It would still be worth a try I reckon, but with perhaps some form.of reinforcement to the solder.

Incidentally, it is worth searching for VW and jag Jatco also, they were popular in the us, and have a lot of breakdown video guides too.

I found on my Freelander with a Jatco that fluid changes worked wonders for hard shifting.
If you do fluid changes by draining from the bottom of the box you only get a portion of the old fluid out and many FL guys will do repeated changes over a period of time. There was a method to change all of the fluid posted on here recently and it seems to be a good way to get a full change.

Sorry back again

As the fluid is supposed to be changed at the specific temperature how is this possible, ?
How do you get it warm if you can't drive the car

1. Or If the car is in garage being done doubt if they would waste time trying to warm it up
2. Or if the gearbox has just been repaired/ replaced and can't drive the car yet ?

Just wondering

12. The fluid level shall now be set according to the Rover procedure. Start the engine, apply the brake and go through all gears/shifter positions one by one and stay in each position for minimum 3 seconds. Return to Park. Let the engine idle until the ATF fluid has reached 35-40 degrees C. The procedure calls for a T4 to check this, but I think it will be sufficient to check the temperature at the aluminium block where the hoses are connected to the oil cooler. When this feels warn, the temperature shall be OK. Remember to put the AC system to OFF when doing this so the fan does not run.
Set the level by removing the level plug and let the fluid drain until it just "dribbles" out of the box. Put the plug back into place, stop the engine and put the air filter box back into place.

You don't need to drive the car to warm the autobox fluid up - just let the engine idle and the ATF temperature creeps up.
