Oil cooler failure.-----
Providing the engine has suffered no damage then easy to fix. Best place to check first.---Engine change---last resort. |

Unfortunately I can't see it being due to a leaking oil cooler Jon as, due to the pressure differential between the oil and coolant inside the oil cooler, you'd expect to see oil in the coolant, not coolant in the oil if the interface failed.

I’ve been in touch with the OP and offered to fit his replacement engine, just sorting out transport to get it up to me.

I had one do this to a chum of mine, the car was purchased for a very small sum because of the issue and the idea was considered to be head gasket failure by the seller. My chum bought this car and ran it down to me. Decided that the oil cooler had leaked internally, and purchased a replacement from Xpart, some coolant, and oil service kit. Replaced the cooler, and filled the cooling system with a mixture of pure orange juice and an oil flush ingredient. Admitedly it took a few miles and another coolant change to get the coolant system cleaned. The engine did run hot, and needed to stop to cool down prior to the repair, it ran quite strangely, but after my interventions it would run great both hot and cold. A clue when the cooler has failed apart from obvious mixing, is the thermostat housing starts to leak out past the pipe seal as the pressure is finding the weak spot and venting the pressure before the coolant tank cap opens up.
I cannot guarantee that this is the exact issue for the OP vehicle, but very likely, and much less expensive than replacing an engine, that may well do the same thing, and risking assumptions that the unit really is healthy. |

I've seen one oil cooler fail and the result was oil in the coolant in the expansion tank, which, given the pressure differentials within the oil cooler, (the expansion tank cap relief for the coolant is 20 psi and the operating pressure is likely around 15psi whilst the idle oil pressure is 21.8 psi cold and it rises from there when the engine speeds up) is the expected result. The only way I can think of coolant getting into the oil with a leaking oil cooler is after a fully warm engine is shut down, as then the oil pressure drops off but the coolant will still be hot and under pressure, but I haven't seen this. |

We had the same problem with the wife's tourer at around 185,000 miles thought it was the oil cooler swapped it out for a known good one from my tourer this did not cure the problem. We did not think the head gasket had gone as the engine ran fine and no oil in the header tank. We put it down to a liner, we changed the engine for one that had done about 98,000 miles its still going well after about another 30,000 plus miles.
