Default Gap in tourer tailgate glass

Hi. I have a big gap on the drivers side of the glass panel on the tailgate. Passenger side is much better but drivers side glass sticks out and I can get my finger between the panel and the rubber. Any idea how this has happened and how I can fix it?

Thanks.

The "square" ring on the latching is adjustable to pull the bottom of the glass closer to the tailgate .

Has it just suddenly happened?

When was it last OK ?

Is the tailgate aperture to tailgate gap equal all the way round ?

It's a bit difficult seeing clearly on the photo's but it looks like the gap between the o/s and n/s light clusters is different, on the n/s one the tailgate edge appears to be further in compared to the o/s, the door edge gaps appear to be different, and the dent in the tailgate on the n/s looks ominous.

Looking at that dent and the gaps, there is a good chance that it has distorted / twisted the tailgate pushing the n/s side in resulting in a greater gap on the o/s .

I only noticed it last week. But, I suspect it’s been like that for a while….

Would I be best replacing the tailgate?

So, the car is in the garage getting a few things done. I asked him about the rear windscreen. He had a look at this and says it needs urgent attention as it’s loose and it’s about to come away from the car. He said it will need to be taken out, resealed and put back in.

Any idea how this has happened? It’s a bit worrying.
When I checked it, the windscreen did seem loose as in I could move it left and right and as the photos, it sticks out particularly on the drivers side.

Sorry Rav I dont understand "It is loose and its about to come away from the car" " He said it needs resealing" ??? As far as I am aware there is no seal around the glass. The glass sits on a rubber seal that is attached to the surround of the aperture. I have just had my glass out to do a small job and all there are the two hinges at the top with which you can adjust the glass, maybe it just needs an adjustment to it. Or the hinges need to be tightened

I’m just going by what he’s told me. I’ll let him know.

The only thing it can be Rav is the glass coming away from the frame which is very unusual!!

Thanks for the advise. I think it’s sorted now. I popped up today and he said he manage to get it adjusted. Looks a lot better then before and much closer to the tailgate. I might fine tune it once I get the car back. Thanks for all the advise.

Hi, perhaps this is a side track from RAV's question on the seal, not sure...

amongst a number of jobs on my Tourer I have just had to rectify a water leak on the tailgate window. Exactly at this joint that RAV is talking about, and could be what the garage was referring to as "coming loose " see below.

After thorough testing, the water was coming in through the gap between the rubber seal between the glass and the rear window frame (visible from outside the car at the edge of the glass), and trickling into the load area through the high level brake light. Not ideal at all especially given the huge downpours we experience here.

The lower seal around the window aperture on the tailgate and the underside of the black frame was making good contact and no water was coming in there, nor through hinges so all was good there.

It appears that the bond between the rear window glass / frame / rubber edge seal had failed at some time ( I only recently bought the car so don't know how long this leak has been happening but strangely no signs of it in the load area even though the car previously stood outside for some time !).

After careful drying out, and application of a black silicone sealant (Ultra Black) injected as deeply and consistently as I could get into the gap between rubber and glass all around - and using foam packers around the opening to push pressure up on the seal from below when glass was closed, and then smoothing the sealant to blend in to the original rubber, it has fully cured the leak, looks standard, and as a bonus the glass window now feels more solid too.

Hope this helps if you have any mystery leaks on a tourer tailgate.
