martin, can you describe the "clonking noise" in a little more detail please. is it a grunting of gears type noise ? or more of a knock type noise (as would come from a badly worn teardrop lower engine mount ? ) the transverse engine does move considerably especially if still moving forwards as reverse is selected, and even when stationary , if too quick a selection to reverse is actioned from say drive position. i tend to pause a moment after stopping to allow time for this, before reverse is selected. what condition are your other engine mounts in , especially the top one that is with the hydromount ? any signs of leakage at the base ? if they are badly worn then you will get movement and even exhaust clonk on selection of gears from standstill. there is also a method of resetting the cable selector position from underneath the gearbox sump by slackening the cable clamp whilst in neutral to ensure the selector is being fully engaged in both directions. there is a thread on here somewhere .. !!! nothing lost to check out these things ...

The Siemens engine management fitted to Martin's KV6 doesn't need the closed position of the throttle position sensor to be set.

Hi Simon,

Johns car is a V6 and resetting the TPS instantly cured the clonk he was getting in drive and reverse, this is his lovely V6

John uses a trusted mechanic who was trained at Cowley and is a specialist in 75s/Zts and runs his own repair business and he said it used to happen a lot to cars in the factory and not just the 75 range and the cure was always the same and not just for the 1.8 so it has to be worth a try

my kv6 is fitted with the power steering sensor. later models had this feature removed. if you pull up alongside a vehicle to reverse into a space , once you turn the steering wheel a rise in engine speed is applied automatically by the sensor. it gives you better steering response during parking. this can happen when you have selected reverse from drive , even after you have paused slightly first, as your natural reaction is to turn the wheel . this can contribute to the clunk. i dont think these box"s like moving from drive to reverse anyway. the other thing i wonder about is the adaptations. the mapping is set with all its inbuilt adaptations for a fuel different to the modern ones . leaded yes but biofuels and now the new fuels currently being introduced here in the uk , cannot be the same to the original mapping. as i found out once i went over to lpg . i wonder what fuels are used in australia at the pump. variations in fuels may work generally but the adaptations at different temps and humidity on different fuels were not programmed in to the original setups . i spoke to a very knowlegable gentleman on here for weeks who worked for rover and his job was to record all of these adaptations , and help set the original mapping. it helped me alot to understand and set up my lpg. so these things do make me wonder .!!!
