Default KV6 belt noise?

Hello chaps

I have recently bought a 75 2.5 v6

The engine is in excellent shape, apart from this intermittent noise (listen in video below)

I have removed the Pas/ac belt and the noise is still present.

So that can only leave the crank pulley, cam belt tensioner or water pump.

Has anyone heard this noise before?

If the noise is still same with belt removed then i would be removing the belt covers and having a look, is there any history of a cambelt change

I’ve gone back out and had another look.

It’s hydraulic tensioner that is the source of the noise.

I am presuming that of these fail they won’t make a noise, so it’s simply passing on the noise that the tensioner bearing is making?

Yes Olly, suspect the tensioner pulley bearing which is renewable separately. Check the idler wheel as well.

Out of interest what's the car's mileage?

I had my sons one make a noise on his V6 ZS180, bearing was failing and starting to grumble after only 2 years and had to change it, similar noise to that. Also changed all the other belt pulley bearings while I was at it as they're only £5 each.

It’s done 107 and is probably due a belt change.

I’ll lock the engine off today and take the tensioner off and see if I can see an obvious problem

As you're removing that you may as well change the belt etc as it will come off anyway

Can I removed the hydraulic tensioner for inspection without risking the belt jumping a tooth?

Unless you've locked the cams into position they will move inwards when you remove anything to do with the belt. You can mark all with tipex as that's what I do so all goes back into the correct position after but they will move otherwise

You can't just remove the tensioner bearing without removing the tensioner as you wont get it back on without possibly damaging the belt as it's under tension so you may as well do the lot
