Default Fixed: Rover 75 2.0 V6 saloon won't start after 8 months

Hi there from northern part of Norway.

I bought a Rover with very low mileage 1 year ago. Drove it home, a beautiful car, placed it in a hired garage, disconnected the starterbattery, took the key and left the car resting for several months.

Yesterday, with new plates, I went to the garage and was looking foreward for a luxury ride. But the car would not start - just a bunch of clics again and again. The starter engine was not working at all.

Starterbattery is all new with 13.2 volts.

So now I hope you guys can help me - and hopefully step by step.

Three simple checks to start with - charge the new battery fully off the vehicle, make sure the battery terminal connections are clean and tight when you refit it, and try turning the engine over by hand using a spanner on the crank pulley to check it isn't seized.

Thank you @Mike Noc.

- the battery is all new and fully charged before I put it in the car.
- the terminals are as new.
- if the engine was seized the starter motor would try to turn the engine, but there is no sound from the starter motor.

And finally: I have cleaned the small wire on starter motor, but without any positive result.

Good to see you have already done the checks.

If it is clicking then the solenoid is operating on the starter motor, so that leaves a bad connection on the main power cable to the starter motor, so worth taking it off and giving it a clean.

The solenoid contacts could have worn, but you mentioned it is a low mileage example so unlikely, but might be worth stripping them out and having a look and give them a clean up. Failing that the starter motor itself may have failed - that would be rare though.

Supplying power directly to the small spade should cause it to engauge the starter, turn the engine and eliminate it from the problem.
Have you done anything with the key?

Thanks Mike and Stocktake. I'll do the starter engine check later today.

Meanwhile I found a youtube-film with problem similar to my problem. Look at this https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RE1zOT01t48

Hello Lauri,

I'm a bit confused.

You said that you bought the car and drove it home, then removed the battery and stored it for 8 months.

So was the battery new before you drove the car home 8 months ago? That seems to be what you are saying. Was it "fully charged" by you using an external charger before the first attempt to start the car after the 8 months? For how long did you leave it on charge?

By the way I would not recommend that you manically turn the ignition on and off repeatedly as the author of the YouTube video is doing.

Hello Simon!

It was the car that was stored for 8 months, not the battery I bought a brand new battery last week, fully charged it at home for 24 hours and then let it rest for 24 hours, measured the volt then which was 13.2 volt with 13.2 volt I tried to start the car, but no way.

So...:
- there is nothing wrong/weakpoints with the battery.
- the terminals are spitshine.
- the small wire to the starter engine is clean.

Could there be a problem with the FOB and the immobilizer since the car has been without battery for so long?

The Varta CR2032 in the key is now brand new, but it did not solve my problem.

...and this is manual transmission.

OK, something else to check, when you opened the fob to fit the new battery, did you note the presence of the immobiliser chip in the key case?
