Default Road signs

Many years ago when I was bus instructing, I always made it clear to my trainees that they were free to ask any driving related questions. On one occasion I was asked a question but didn't know the answer, so I confidently said I don't know, I'll get back to you tomorrow.

Pride came before a fall and I couldn't find the answer, even after phoning Sussex, and Surrey traffic police. The question was, "On triangular bridge height warning and round prohibition signs, above and below the stated height there is a black inward facing triangle. Why do they sometimes have a large triangle top or bottom and the other triangle smaller?

Any guesses or definitive answers?

I have yet to find sign where large triangle is at bottom and small triangle is at top. As far as I can find you either have both triangles with same height or the above one is bigger or there is only above one without bottom one.
From my understanding above one is there to signify that you have height restrictions and danger comes from above if you are over the size limit. Bottom triangle is there (if pictured) mere to graphicaly inform you that it is the height size that you need to watch out.
In case of round sign both triangles are usualy the same size, and in triangular sign different sizes are used to attrack drivers attention tomimportant information.

I am interested to find out if there is different answer to this question.

If I have ever seen a sign where the triangles are different sizes, it has never registered to me that that sign differs from any other sign with triangles.

I will try to keep an eye out.

Only thing I can think of is that it highlights the top because that is the part of the bridge you are going to hit.

Height restriction warning sign with metric units

Warning signs are triangular with a red border (see warning signs for further examples) and can be used to indicate a low bridge or obstruction in imperial or metric units. Two signs detailing both units may also be used.
Height restriction warning signs may be situated well in advance of the low bridge and may include distance to the hazard on a separate plate.

The bridge is either in a dip, crest of a hill or flat road.

I don't think there is any particular significance , but the one above is indicating it is overhead clearance and that's the important bit . It wouldn't really matter if they left the bottom one off , but dimensions usually have an arrow or a triangle at each end . The guy who designed it had to put something on it and that's his version !

If you do a search for height restriction sign all the options appear, equal triangles, large triangle at the top small at the bottom and no triangle at the bottom.
