My son has paid the charge, he didn't want to gamble the £80.
Surely if he did not need to pay, it should be refunded.

Not sure how you would go about that?
As there is NO way of finding out if you have actually been in the zone. The system is not setup that way. CASHCOW!!!

We have gone through his phone & satnav, but were unable to get a 100% certain route. We know he went north-west to the A406, but nothing more detailed.

He had a choice, £12.5 or gamble on £80/£0. With a cutoff of 23:59 last night.

I don't understand how ULEZ and the dart charge can't simply tell you if you have a charge to pay by simply searching your reg on their website which would be very simple to implement. As you say, just an easy way to earn extra money of those who are unsure whether they've entered the ULEZ zone or not.

The whole thing is just a money making exercise, it has very little to do with reducing emissions. If it were, then they would outright ban vehicles that aren't ULEZ compliant from entering. But instead, they allow you in if you dig into your pockets, does that somehow make my vehicle less polluting?

The amount of people in the trade who now won't take on any jobs inside the ULEZ zone, or will only take it on if the customer pays for the ULEZ cost. This has effectively made services more expensive for some inside the ULEZ zone. The amount of businesses affected too, I used to drive into areas such as Green Street in East London for shopping and there were quite a few restaurants in the area we really enjoyed, haven't been back to them since the ULEZ came in and wont be going to them again anytime soon as I have no plans to buy any newer cars any time soon.

I understand this being implemented in Central London same as the Congestion Charge, but out to the 406 is ridiculous and they're pushing to bring it out to the M25.

I feel for the amount of people inside the 406 who barely get by month to month and run a older car simply because they can't afford a newer one, of which many would have had to ditch their older car for a cheap poorly maintained ULEZ compliant one. It's going to be much worse if it comes out to the M25.

This is one of the reasons why I'm moving from Thurrock to Norfolk.

All true, but my eldest son's 51 plate corsa is ULEZ compliant
so you don't have to buy a new car, just the right car

That is true, but would still mean ditching a perfectly good running car for another one just for the sake of reg plate lottery. Didn't we have it with the petrol models of our cars where some were ULEZ compliant whilst others were not even though they were the same engine?

I just find that mass producing and churning out millions of cars every year only for people to keep trading them in every few years is much more harmful overall than keeping our older cars running and keeping them well maintained.

Just wait until there's enough electric cars on the road and a new road charge comes out to use them to make up for the loss in income from taxing petrol and diesel cars, just like how in the early 2000's we were encouraged to buy diesel cars over petrol models and now getting penalised for it.
