Default Thermostat maybe.

As some know been having a coolant loss for some time now.
But there was never any sign of coolant loss in the engine or drips on the floor.
Well have found it.
Its coming out of the coolant filler cap.
Have now put a new one on.but still the same.
But we have noticed the coolant rises only when the engine fan kicks in at 100c as soon as the temp starts to drop the coolant starts to drop.
Could this be the thomstat sticking or faulty.

Thanks

But what is the normal operating temperature of the car? Mine is constant around 95 deg using either the car's obd or my Torque Pro. The fan should kick in anywhere between 96 and 100, yours sounds a little late.

Regards

Sorry Mike, that is incorrect. Steve's fan is working normally. It starts running at 100 degrees and stops at 96.

Steve, did you make this observation with the expansion tank cap removed as the engine warmed up?

just dont get when it hits the 100c and the fan cuts in the coolent over flows the as the temp drops so does the water to its right level.

OK Simon, have heard various sources, I think the one I quoted from was written by Jules, same numbers from Keith (Ellesmere), confusing isn't it?

I believe this is from the MGR Workshop Manual
EDIT: The yellow comment is mine. I'm unclear why 'Valid = No' is in column 7 header.

Default Coolant Tank Level

How much coolant do you have in the header tank, is it only to the maximum mark, can you see the step in side the tank with a torch as here below, anymore than that and you stand a chance of there being no expansion therefore you will lose coolant through the cap, also make sure the cap is fully turned down, so much as you can no longer turn it.
