Default Thanks Trikey, KV6 .....just a click on starting and main lights flash

As stated in the title, this is what happened when I went to use my Rover 75 today. On putting a power starter pack on, the click just was a little louder.

Looks like I am going to have to drop the starter motor out and refurbish the solenoid.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to which kit to buy as being the best? There are a number of them on flea bay.

That will be a really flat battery that’s caused that, fit a good replacement and try again.

A poorly solenoid won’t make the headlights flash 👍

Thanks Trikey.

Obviously came to the wrong conclusion as in the past with a dud battery not even the central locking would work. Added to that my power starter which has worked well in the past didn't touch it.

All this led me to the wrong conclusion. Will have a look closer at the battery........almost new so should still be under warranty

Ashley, put your nearly new battery on charge for at least 24 hours, preferably longer. So long as it hasn't been left in a discharged condition for a long period, you might just be able to save it.

You say you used a power starter pack. That should have overcome the problem of a flat battery.--

Charge the battery well, by all means, but don't be surprised that's not the answer to your problem.---

Bad electrical problem as you've suggested already or , maybe, a poor earth connection somewhere. ( Battery pillars ?? )

Hi Ashley.
As above first get the battery on a 24hr charge when fitting make sure the clamps are secure do not over tighten them, if you do they will work loose again.

If after that you need starter motor contacts & plunger link below.

Thanks for the answers......much appreciated.

I presume with the battery it may have the voltage but not the amps??............but would have thought the power pack starter would have overcome this

Unfortunately in pushing the car to a safer position I ruptured my achilles tendon so any investigations may have to wait.

Thanks again to our wonderful NHS.

It could also be a bad connection at the starter, or ground attachment to the body, or corrosion between the battery terminals and the cable ends. Take them off and clean them up with sandpaper.

Correct!
If you put eight 1.5v AA batteries together they will read 12 volts but they won't start your car!

I'm sorry to hear about your injury. Just a nudge to ask a friend/relative/neighbour to get your battery on charge a.s.a.p. Time is of the essence if it's to be saved.

Always clean the posts and lead connections with a wire brush or emery tape as they can have a layer of corrosion which stops the juice! They should look nice and shiny on all the contact surface between the leads and the posts. I've seen many a "new" battery be rejected due to corroded leads or posts.
