Default May I play Devil’s advocate?

I will say at outset that I think smart m/ways are anything but smart, in fact positively dangerous, and I avoid using lane 1 if at all possible. I will cite safety in my defence if prosecuted for ‘middle lane hogging'.

However, what is the difference between a smart m/way and a dual carriageway A road?

In fact, the trunk road could be more dangerous, having the same 70mph limit, but (usually) only 2 lanes, lay-bys much further apart than the M/way refuge areas, 'sharper' junctions, and the occasional slow-moving farm vehicle, if the A46 Leicester to Newark is typical. Also less, if any, CCTV monitoring, and fewer Police patrols.

Ihope this ain't fake news cos at last it looks like someones had a bit of sense and put a hold on these stupid smart roads - Highways England chief executive Jim O’Sullivan claimed the roads were too complicated and no more dynamic motorways would be built. He also spectacularly claimed Highways England chiefs may NOT have properly looked into the safety of the scheme
