This is on my to do list - just as an elimination thing really.

Undo the throttle cable at the throttle body. Hold it up in the air and squirt some WD40 down it. Give it chance to run down to the other end(throttle pedal). Refit to throttle body and you may find it is ok. Mine was the same. Never been oiled or lubricated.

One simple thing to do is adjust the throttle cable to remove any free play.

A slightly better idea. Put some lubricating oil. ( A small quantity. ) inside a very small balloon. Slip this over the end of the throttle cable with an elastic band to hold it in place.---Squeeze the balloon gently and the lubricating oil will travel the length on the the cable and lubricate any dry sections very efficiently..------

PS.--WD 40 is not a lubricant.

When driving downhill, my automatic transmission downshifts when the foot is not on the accelerator pedal. Is this normal? It only does this below certain speeds. At speeds below 60 km/h.

Yes, it's to provide engine braking.

I know this has gone off topic, but as it already has --

My 2.5 V6 saloon auto has the down shift / engine braking, but my diesel auto doesn't.

Is this T4 selectable, or was it deleted on later (immediate pre-facelift) cars, I wonder?

I prefer not to have it.

Thanks for any answers.

Mike

Diesel engine’s have not got much engine braking. Lorries have got what is called an exhaust brake, usually operated by a button that you put your foot on to operate. This gives some engine braking, but not as much as a petrol engine. As far as I know, it is not a T4 selectable item. It is a natural event from any petrol engine. Unless someone knows better?

Many thanks for your answer, totally logical to my way of thinking - now that it's been pointed out.

Regards

Mike
