Nasty rattle cdt on steering?!
Suddenly my cdt tourer has developed a very loud engine knocking, this is most apparent on dry steering and a bit when low speed manoeuvring. Seems like extra load is causing it. Car done 238 000 I have been slack and not done the oil in couple of years but this has come on fairly suddenly. Any ideas? Thanks

It may just be something loose and that particular frequency is rattling it when steering, definitely sounds very metallic and from the front, I might have to have the Undertray off and look underneath

That sounds exactly like mine did when the crank pulley was goosed, as you turn the steering the power steering pump loads the crank pulley and it clatters worse, does it get quieter as the revs increase if so its just started to deteriorate I would say that you need a new crank pulley

It's almost certainly the crankshaft pulley breaking down. The rubber damper inside perishes and splits, before breaking apart. Turning the steering wheel puts extra load on the engine; hence the clattering noises your getting!
My 75 2.0 cdt Tourer had the guts revved out of it on the MOT last year. 2 days later, the pulley started fall apart. I gingerly got it back to the garage who did the work. £350 later, I had it nice and quiet again! In fairness to the test station, it was on it's way out anyway at 146,000 miles on the original pulley. It's just being cleaned up to sell. It's been a really good car, but I don't use it enough to warrant running a diesel; (around 3000miles a year?) |

Hi Will.
It does sound like the crankshaft pulley to be 100% sure remove the belt and see what it sounds like then. Only use a corteco pulley any others will fail early so buy cheap buy twice https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/175325741777 Always best to change the belts as well at the same time. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/162597598422 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/174947881084 Changed mine recently 1
