I tried spray adhesive along the front edge of mine at top of windscreen, I had to brush it on but it shows through. With the backing disintegrated the material is very thin. I bodged it for now so it doesn't show through the windscreen from the outside.
When the backing disintegrates it goes crumbly, say like sawdust, so won't stick back smoothly to the board. The roof headboard has to be stripped with all the old backing wire brushed/sanded off so that there is a sound surface for gluing the new material.
Mine's only gone at front edge at mo but as I don't fancy removing the headlining, in readiness, I have bought the cloth covered buttons which are a good colour match and with careful work I think will look reasonable. I did a friends Golf out in Portugal a few years ago, a quick job using pearl headed pins pushed in at an angle, it looked ok and still does. When you think of it the only people that really get a view of the headlining are the rear seat passengers.
Good luck with whatever option you go for.
