That's a bit rubbish then, I assumed that as they were allowing you to download maps, it'd work offline.
Bit daft.

My sat nav seems to have bit the dust so I am thinking maybe I will get a tablet to use in and out of the car.

You can see it navigate here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUIZL_rvCIY

This is done offline with pre downloaded maps.

The very end of the video is a slight put off if accurate.

You could well be if the Sat Nav isn't working!

I might well go with the Co-Pilot if I can find it at a good price, as it does look quite good!

I use co-pilot live, its not free but its not stupidly expensive either. Have a look here

http://www.copilotlive.com/uk/personal/android.asp?

Its the best alternative to tom tom and you can download it from the play store.
Re Copilot and Google Play Store.... Looked here and guessing that the one you refer to is the third one down at £18.99? Just wondering what the top one is, that just says "Install"? Does that mean it's free?!

The free one looks to be a route planning app - so it isn't turn by turn. Similar to using Google maps on your pc and planning a route prior to setting off. I could be wrong but that is what it looks like.

If you've got an Android phone then you really need to have data as part of your contract, Android's love nothing more then being connected! If you have data then just use Google Maps / Nav, it really doesn't use much at all especially if you cache the maps before hand.

I have a 500Mb allowance, I use wifi at home and in the office so even when using it for navigation I rarely use much of that.

I use waze, completely free and user generated. Ie if there's something missing on the map, you can go online and add it!

Tried downloading it and can't get it to do anything - it's saying it's not installed even though it is!

Also have 500mb and intend using wi-fi at home. Probably won't use much out and about for fear of going over the limit and getting stung! (which is why I am also worried about the Voicemail costs!)

On the latter topic, similarly worried about unintentionally making video calls. Saw this was an option, and, as Gill has an S2, tried it. Good for a laugh, but not much use in a "real world" scenario probably - have since looked at my online bill and the 30 second trial has cost me 39p! So now looking for a way to disable this to avoid accidentally using it in the future!
