Jamie - re a new hard drive for your desktop machine, the Hitachi Deskstar is extremely reliable. I've had a lot of them and not one has ever packed up. (NB. Hitachi bought IBM's hard drive division so the Deskstar is actually an IBM design). They're available in a range of capacities - approx £100 will get you a 500Gb drive.

I was looking at the Toshiba U300 and noticed that the Sony has a bigger hard drive 200GB...not bad for a note book, it also seems to be consederably cheaper than the Toshi.

Bother gets discount at PC world so I might go this route if you think its a good un.
Closest I could find was the Sony VGN NR10E/S with 160gb HD?

And if you go to the Dixons site and use Code "JAN10" you can get a further £10 Off.

Western Digital, Maxtor, Seagate, Hitachi.. models vary

That Sony is a reasonable buy but its an obsolete model now. I can do them for around £425 inc Delivery but lead time of 10days

My old beast is slow & dated & was looking on PC World & Currys website last night for a replacement & found several. Thing is I know nothing about the damn things but this one looked pretty good.
Most of the info on the spec is Chineese to me.

I've always had Toshiba lab tops. They are very good. I prefer lap tops because they take up less space and I can carry mine around and use in different rooms or my car.

Tower systems seem to have more memory etc than lap tops for the same price.
