High CPU usage could either be because the system has slowed the clock speed right down to try to deal with an overheating event or you have malware which is busily joining it's friends is a DDOS attack somewhere in the world. Try downloading and burning a live Linux CD, boot off of that and see if the machine reboots or is OK. If it still reboots it does sound like a mainboard issue (maybe heat?) if it's fine then it's probably software.

You need to see what application is running the cpu at that %.

Plus the PC maybe BSODing without you realising so when you first turn the PC on keep tapping F8 then scroll down to:

Disable automatic restart on system failure.

If it is BSODing then the PC will stay on the BSOD screen (blue screen of death)

In there there will be a 0X000XXX code which will relate to what's happening, just Google that and it should shed some light.

I had this at one point.

It turned out to be.... The Power supply unit!

What had happened was, there was a build up of dust inside the unit eventually leading to a sort of a flashover, so it couldn't provide enough power for it to run, so the PC just shut down or rebooted.

Got a new one & it worked super. That was 10 years ago mind!

Thanks again for all the advice... Have the PC currently not online, plus I ran a good malware, Malwarebyte Anti-malware - all clear.
Changed the Power Supply Unit in case it was that..
Will try the Ram swap tomorrow.
I do have a friend who's a bit of a fundhi but he's away at the mo...

Thanks all again.

I will say it seems better today, sometimes running for an hour or more! But the 100% CPU worries me...?
And it doesn't get hot... Hardly warm to the touch...???

But it's still doing it but I have just noticed that on my Performance the CPU is running at 96-98% even at Idle!!! Ram at 60-70%. It used to tun at about 2-5% before...????
This cannot be right.... Any ideas?

Thanks.
Pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del should bring up Task Manager, if you then click the Processes tab. If you then look down the CPU column, it will show which process is using al of that CPU time. It is normal for System Idle Process to be using a large amount of the CPU time, it is the process which does nothing, but idle.

It sounds as if it is over heating due to over work.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

I started it in safe mode and then the CPU runs at between 0-3% but it still reboots after a few minutes.
It doesn't seem to be overheating.

It could still be malware. There are bugs out there now that bury themselves so deep in the OS that once infected even the likes of malware bytes can't detect or remove them. Case in point was a laptop we had brought in, nothing we tried could find any form of infection however when we removed the hard drive and popped it onto out test rig it was found to be riddled. Sadly in that case the virus was so ingrained in the OS that removing it killed the patient and we had to reinstall anyway, however fortunately we were about to save his data!

May I suggest running in command line mode. Run chkdsk /f
Then try removing a RAM module and see how you go.

It sounds very much like you have picked up some malware, try installing spybot S&D and run it that should find what's infecting your machine. But if you want to do a fresh install of windows then follow the instructions below.

Boot up in dos and type format c: this will format the hard drive before trying a fresh install of windows. Once formatted reboot with your windows disk inserted in the pc and start a fresh install. If it reboots during this process, Then you could have a memory module fault, the CPU fan could not be running properly, your CPU is on it's way out, or your motherboard or something plugged into your mother board has developed a fault.
