Default Will this work on my machine?

As I've posted before I'm running and ancient laptop, 20Gig HD, 1.5 gig ram, Windows XP home.

Clearing out stuff at work I've come across some disks for XP Professional - will this run on my machine, and would I gain anything worthwhile by doing so?

It should work as it will be basically an 'upgrade' from XP-Home. I used XP-Pro for years but never used the Home so I can't really draw a comparison. Sorry.

I've used both and there is not that much difference.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

As Harry has said, there's not a lot of difference. If you install an elderly copy of XP Professional, there will be hours worth of Microsoft Updates required to bring it up to date - I very much doubt it's worth the hassle

Isn't XP now off the MS support listing therefore no updates available, that could be potentially dangerous as XP is still in common commercial usage and maybe subject to attack on unpatched systems.

Whereas the version you now have will have been patched over the years and be much safer.

Not quite, XP is being supported until something like May 2014, or some such date.

I'm still very much receiving updates on my XP system and I suggest there pre-existing updates will be there for a long time to come, but will eventually end is any further updates.

Even security updates for XP are supposed to be ceasing on the 8th April 2014 Over the years, I've used most of the different versions of Windows, both for business and pleasure, and XP has been the most stable I've ever had. It's not that long ago that I went into Sainsburys one Sunday morning just as they were opening - some of their cash registers hadn't been fired up and they were displaying the Windows XP Professional logo.
Suppose I'll have to upgrade to 7 or 8 in the not too distant future - then comes the hassle of finding all my software to reload.
