I am running Firefox at the moment, as I have heard so many conflicting stories about XP I am not sure how long XP will keep running

I haven't used explorer for years to be honest, use Firefox. XP will keep running, just won't be updated.

I loved XP still have it on my old PC which still happily runs.
I bought XP Pro when it first came out, shame they are not keeping it updated.

Then I bought Vista which I thought was rubbish in comparison, then purchased Win 7 Ultimate which I like very much after getting it to run as it should.

Now have a new laptop with Windows 8.1 on, which again does need to be re-arranged to run as I wanted it to.
Because it likes to let Windows Live run everything and that I couldn't stand so now have it setup more like Win 7.

For me there is only one browser worth using and that is Firefox but really it's down to the individual and what your specific needs are.
Chrome I find is intrusive and a nightmare to use but that's just me.

I have another machine with Linux on which I do like using but not all my programs will run on it.

As long as you make sure you have a proper anti-virus program with a proper firewall, there is nothing wrong with using XP.

You might wanna replace the computer eventually, but not because of XP, just because it's very likely that a computer with XP has old hardware.

I have Google and Firefox. Google has thrown in the towel with explorer and will not be having any updates soon because Microsoft will abandon it.Sounds a bit like blackmail to get you to move over to the Microsoft latest expensive programmes. I suppose i can not really moan, i had my computer specially built for me 12 years ago, and it is still working. Wife said she will buy me a laptop for Christmas, so might be getting a good pressie.

I've just switched to Firefox because Chrome was sending me messages saying it would no longer support my outdated hardware - it seems their minimum CPU requirement is Pentium 4.

I was surprised, the reason I've used Chrome for ages is because it would run on just about anything! This laptop wont even run Explorer!

However I will say that on a tablet, Chrome is rubbish.

Depends on the make of the tablet, if its fruit based then it's not a true chrome browser is just a reskin of safari

Not planning to change soon, XP is reasonably stable (but nowhere near as bombproof as W98 was) and running Firefox and Thunderbird to talk to the rest of the world... no issues in five years use says something!

So, as XP will no longer be updated by Microsoft, what do you recon is the best anti virus software out there. ( and there seems to be a lot of them)

I work in IT as an IT Project Manager. I would suggest moving from XP to Windows 7 at the earliest opportunity. Don't go to 8.1 if you can avoid it (Its pap). I have just migrated 2000 machines to Windows 7, any machine running Windows XP has been segregated from our network and ring fenced. XP is now deemed to vulnerable without security patches.

Windows 7, although not perfect is the first operating system I have migrated "users" to that has not resulted in thousands of emails to describe where x or y have gone. Its simply easy to pick up and intuitive to an Ex XP user.
