Gaming PC
Hi guys
Looking to spend around a grand on a gaming and media tower. It'll be hooked up to my 46F8000 TV so it's just the tower I need and maybe a wireless integrated mouse keyboard. Obviously, I went as good a spec as possible as I like to be fairly future proof. I'm not really comfortable building one myself. Let me know if you've any ideas Cheers James

Building one yourself is really easy - easier than you think.
Failing that, I would highly recommend chillblast |

When you buy a motherboard for your computer, the manual that comes with it, pretty much tells you how to build the pc - I was terrified the first time I tried one.

You've certainly had some experience. Any advice in terms of hardware to avoid?

They have good hints and tips on what the best hardware for your buck is. In fact, if you post with a budget, they will recommend the best You should be able to save a bit of cash, especially if you already have an OS but the best bit is you only pay for what you need and can get the best performance per pound for gaming |

I know more games are available for the PC, but, have you considered a MAC?
My PC laptop is an i7 processor with 8gb of ram and a Geforce dedicated graphics card and cost around £850 new about 12 months ago, and my secondhand Mac is mid 2007 dual core with 4gb of ram and cost £280. I do most of my intense work (graphics / video etc) on the Mac as is so much more efficient and faster than the PC as its held by the windows OS. Just a thought, but dont really have much experience of gaming though. Simon

If its gaming PC then you need to decide the level of Graphics card you want to pay for .. nowadays most mid level cards can cope with the majority of games.
The GFX card really should be the most expensive single part in a gaming PC A couple of years ago I went to a 2nd hand top end card of a previous year, A GTX 295) original RRP £500+) got it for £90 and its only now just starting to show its limits @ 4 years old. C.

If you build a PC make sure you use an anti static strap. Only a fiver and worth every penny as static can kill your hardware but is even worse as it can cause some damage that makes your PC un stable or iffy that you spend ages trying to sort.
I'm not trying to scare you but after years of IT work, electronics degrees and teaching not using one seems daft. A good gaming PC is graphics card and fast ram. Main proc isn't the big one. Look to the games you want to play and choose AMD or Nvidia based on that. Start with single channel graphics so that you can add a second one later as needed. IT moves so fast that in 18 months to 2 years your machine will be out of date. Thus can mean that you never buy as there is always something better coming ☺ Don't rush the build take your time and ask if unsure. |

Trouble with MACs is all the typical gaming spec towers are quite brutally priced. However they do seem to have a much longer shelf life even if on paper they're using slower processors. Quote:
I don't wanna be upgrading all the time, 4 years is ideal for me so I tend to buy better processors and graphics cards to last me. RAM fortunately is pretty cheap.
